SINGAPORE: A man who weighed 195 kilogrammes has managed to shed more than 20 kilogrammes during his three-week stay at the National University Hospital.
He underwent a weight-loss surgery called Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy, which involved removing a large portion of his stomach.
Before the surgery,
37-year-old Eric Lee was wheel-chair bound. With a 65-inch waist and a
BMI that was double that of an average adult, his weight seriously
affected his work and daily life.
He had a big appetite and could eat up to three packets of noodles for breakfast.
He
was advised by doctors to undergo the surgery, but had to be warded to
lose weight before that. On a controlled diet managed by the hospital
(NUH), Mr Lee lost over 20 kilogrammes.
During the surgery,
two-thirds of Mr Lee's stomach was removed. This led to a reduction in
his appetite. Within one week, he lost six kilogrammes and dropped to
169kg.
Mr Lee said: "My boss triggered me to come for this
operation. My parents, how long can they take care of me? Even if the
boss wanted to take care of me, cannot for life. Eventually, I have to
take care of myself. So I have to make (this) move."
Doctors have set Mr Lee a goal to reduce his weight to 75kg in one and a half years.
