THE police are believed to have confirmed the worst fears of Madam Hu Ping Zhu, whose son was reported missing on April 28 this year.
Responding to media queries on Monday, the police said a partial body found at Bedok Reservoir last month is that of a male 23-year-old Chinese national.
While the police did not reveal his name, sources close to the case told The Straits Times that the person referred to was indeed Mr Lin Xiao, 23, a vehicle-workshop apprentice and Madam Hu's only son.
A check on the police's missing persons website also found that his name had been removed. Madam Hu - also a Chinese national - and Mr Lin's Singaporean stepfather were informed of the news last Saturday, according to the source.
The Straits Times visited the family's Chai Chee flat on Monday but they declined to comment. A police spokesman said investigations are ongoing.
Madam Hu, 43, had initially identified the partial body - which comprised the lower half and parts of the torso - by the jeans and belt it was wearing. A bunch of keys found in the jeans also fitted the lock of the Chai Chee flat.

Decomposed body at Clementi: woman charged with murder
SINGAPORE: A 36-year-old derivatives trader has been charged with the murder of Celine Ng Swee Peng, whose decomposed body was found in Clementi Woods Park on July 6.
Ang Soo Hoon, who was Ng's housemate, is accused of killing the 37-year-old property agent at West Coast Crescent's West Bay Condominium between 3am and 9.50am on May 26.
The boyish, bespectacled Ang, looked worried when the charge was read out to her.
She
appeared as though she had been crying, and avoided eye contact with
the some 30 members of the public who were seated in the gallery who are
believed to be mostly Ng's friends.
Before last week's gruesome discovery, it was reported that Ng had been missing since her birthday on May 26.
She was last seen at West Coast Crescent in a purple top and black pants.
Ang will be remanded at the Central Police Division with permission to bring her out for further investigations.
She will be back in court on July 20.

The matter that make up the body will eventually return to the earth, air and water. Matter is neither created nor destroyed.
