it took the authorities 2 years to collect evidence in order to bring the matter to court. if he is able to explain things away then something must be very wrong. -

If it is a clear cut case, it would be very fast, no hesitation and very direct.

If every monetary transaction was done with discussion, voting, approval, proper signatures, and shown in the financial statements, where is the wrong doing, even if there are losses?
There is no crime, except breach of regulatory laws. i.e. doing what is not allowed.
This is where the regulators.
Unless you are one of the givers, what the church does with their money is none of your business. I see people of no religion, of other religion, taking this opportunity to condemn this religion, when it is none of their business, unless it is to fund terrorists.

i read in CAD websites before that typical investigations take 2 - 3 years at its shortest, and it been applied to cases including the famed Sunshine Empire cases
so i wouldnt say length of investigations indicate strength or dificulty of cases

Investigation start from the time of whistle blowing.
That is the point in which investigation take root, and the investigators dig into the past from that point as far back as necessary.
From that point, the church committee would also be alerted and would be more cautious and may cease their actions altogether.
Every fact is checked and expanded into its minute details, this could be an endless process, so they would have to have a deadline to stop their investigation.
