Hmm..well...Christmas in prison not so bad. On the evening of Christmas Eve, there are Christian volunteers, males and females choir, will be carolling for the inmates while they are all lock-up in their cells. After each carolling songs, all the inmates will cheer and clap their hands for them. Early next morning on Christmas, the Christian inmates will be release from their cells early to attend church service. All inmates will have the whole day yard time and watch movies in the mess hall. Special dishes for all inmates will be like chicken rice or bryani chicken but those inmates celebrating Christmas will have additional special dishes like turkey and desserts. Every inmates look forward to festive season holidays while serving their time because it means they can enjoy the little freedom in the yard whole day from 8am to 5pm to play games, watching movies, exercise, do their laundry, bathe the whole day etc.

Well, if you just arrive in prison to serve your sentence...you will be lock-up for 23 hours and you only have about 1 hour yard time and sometimes only 30 minutes. You will be lock-up for about a couple of months before you can work in the workshops run by SCORE.

Its the time inmates are let out from their cells for fresh air to feel some freedom. Its not easy to spend 23 hours in the cell with 3 or 2 other inmates in the cell room which approximately measured around 3.5 X 5.5 metres I think. -

Most of the time for new inmates, they will read books, magazines, talk about their crime they had committed or simply eat and sleep during that 23 hours lock up. The warders will treat you all the same without any priveleges and they will see you like someone who is zero.

Some warders are good and talk to you nicely...but most of the time they needed to make you feel zero about yourself first so you will learn your mistakes from your crime that you had committed. I really don't blame the warders to treat the inmates like that because most of the inmates will take the warders' kindness as weakness and they will try to take advantage of the warders. -

In the begining, life as an inmate in prison is very difficult to pass but once they are able to adjust and adapt the prison environment, the new inmate will be ok. Then once you are selected to work in a SCORE workshop within the prison, the inmate's life would be easier. Every end of the week, the working inmates will get paid canteen allowance and some of the allowance will be saved in their POSB saving account for them to use when they are released from imprisonment. And some portions of their weekly allowance they are entitled to purchase some can foods for their consumption. The working inmates will start work in their respective workshops from 8am to 5pm. -

Yes and they have no choice. Not everyday the inmates are given good food. There is no instant noodles and they hardly can get sardine as their meals but once they start working they can purchase the sardine weekly. Out of 7 days, 2 days they are served with hard boiled egg, with ikan bilis (enchovy), sawi veggie, rice with sambal (chilli) sauce. The prison used to have inmates as cooks at the cookhouse to cook for all the inmates. Now I think the food are supplied by outside caterers I think. The Army food is ten times better that the prison food.
