THE Land Transport Authority (LTA) has turned down a marine company's application to be the seventh taxi operator here.
Tiong Asia Marine, which repairs, paints and cleans boilers for the shipping industry, applied in May, despite signs that the market was overcrowded.
An LTA spokesman said it had rejected the application 'after due consideration'. No reason was given.
Since the cab industry was liberalised in 2003, four newcomers have joined incumbents SMRT and ComfortDelGro. There are now around 24,700 cabs on the road - from just over 19,000 in 2003.
But taxi ridership figures have been sliding. For the financial year ended March, average cab ridership was 907,000 a day - down from 927,000 the year before and a record 991,000 three years ago.

they could do a better job to ease overcrowding for public transportration by estab. a bus co.
If i get this correct,
Cab ridership per day is averaged at 907,000....cab nos 24,700. That means per day a cab will have an average of 36 passengers per day....
If on average per passenger pay $10, then it means $360 for a cab per day; $10,800 per month.
However, to be more accurate, if the ridership includes other passengers, then per cab takes up to 4 passengers 50% of the time out of the total daily ridership, thus 20 passengers per day share a cab thus making it 5 trips while the other 16 take cab individually..total 21 trips per cab per day.
This will equals to $210 per day per cab. $6,300 per month.
Take note that i am only using $10 per trip.. it could be more.

ah bo then ????
991,000 3 years ago ....
yes .....that was the time they decided to overhaul everything ...
yes , that was the time when everytime u hit town , it's a call waiting for you .
From Tanglin Mall all the way to Suntec and Shenton .
This 2 Public Listed taxi companies SMRT and Comfortdelgro has a hand in LTA's decision .... cos they'll be the first to get hit once again if Tiong Asia Marine got the license .
After TransCab's exercise of getting cabbies to drive their taxis , and Prime .
And TransCab is getting another 6000 Wish drivers , where to get ?
Comfort , SMRT , Smart & Silver la ..... whereas Smart and Silver their taxi is more or less lease out to Pte Taxi Operator from AMK and Haig Road . Left SMRT & Comfort .

u got it wrong, just like our esteemed transport minister did 2 years ago. to set things straight...
1. cab ridership nos. : take it wif a huge dose of salt. when fetching family members or friends also must press meter even though no $$$ to collect. sometimes accidently pressed the meter when unhired, happens all the time
2. $10 per trip : lucky to get 5 $10 trips a day. most common are $5-$7. on your "lucky" days, around 10 trips $3-$4 also have. remember, erp charges goes to the gahment. this one they never mentioned in the press reports when giving figures on drivers collections. $5-$15 is the daily norm for day drivers. gotta deduct this from the fare when you want to calculate taxi drivers' earnings. which they never do.
3. $210 per day, $6300 per month. Do you work 24/7 , 7 days a week? obviously nobody does, so what makes you think taxi drivers do? you wouldn't want to take this taxi if the driver is doing that. he is more than likely to fall asleep at the wheel.
4. quote "However, to be more accurate, if the ridership includes other passengers, then per cab takes up to 4 passengers 50% of the time out of the total daily ridership, thus 20 passengers per day share a cab thus making it 5 trips while the other 16 take cab individually..total 21 trips per cab per day." unquote
the figures they gave are trips per day. so i'd say that takes the nos. of passengers out of the equation. as to the number of trips....refer to 1.
5. many taxi drivers work a 12 hour shift cos to work as an omo really takes someone real hungry cos their family life & health will suffer. (no offence to omo drivers) i did omo for 2 months and i'd say it really sucks big time. but then i'm with comfort and of course the rental is killing me. the first 6-7 hours of driving you are basically working for them, to earn the rental & diesel. to make a decent living, gotta drive for at least another 8 hours to make $150-$200. take a day's rest on sunday, that's $400-$500 rental that has to be paid + another $750-$1000 off the income. holidays income will dip cos nobody's going to work in the morning, be lucky to earn $80. so you are looking at a ballpark figure of $4000 IF you are an omo AND if you drive diligently for 14 hours a day. down with flu? God bless you. rental's still gotta be paid, loss of earnings too.
6. knn, if you are a non-exec employee, the employment act says you are not to work more than 12 hours a day, 44 hours a week, (unless your boss applies in writing to MOM). taxi driver whacks 14 hour days, excluding breaks. is that a life? is his or her life less precious than anybody else's? so we put in our 12 hour work days just like any other employee. fair enough?
if taxi drivers earn $6300 a month, everybody and his brother will probably want to be one too. you are the maths genius, go figure what a 12 hour shift taxi driver earns in a month. do remember, as in any business, there'll be ups and downs in the business cycle as dictated by the vagaries of the economy.
but i still can't get a taxi!

Taxi ridership sinking

COMMUTERS continue to shy away from taking taxis, with ridership numbers sinking to their lowest levels in six years.
Taxi drivers had it the worst over the three months from June to August this year, when daily average ridership plunged to
below 840,000 - a level not seen since the Sars outbreak in 2003.
Compared to the same period last year, it was just under 10 per cent down.
