AN AMERICAN teacher who punched a taxi driver in his left eye and chest was jailed for four weeks on Tuesday.
Richard Bryan Redd Jr, 33, admitted hurting Mr Boey Kin Keong infront of Hotel 81 in Bencoolen Street on April 20.
The court heard that on arrival at the hotel from Orchard Towers, Redd wanted to pay the $6.90 fare using his ez-link card. But on being told that the taxi was not equipped with the facility, he wanted to pay by credit card.
Again, the 53-year-old cabby told him it was not possible and waived the fare but Redd insisted on paying. After both had alighted, Redd punched Mr Boey on his left eye and chest area.
Another cabby saw the incident and called the police, who came and observed Redd to be drunk.
A second charge of pushing the victim's head with his hands was taken into consideration. He could have been jailed for up to two years or fined up to $5,000 or both.
