It can never become a Career. Its a Eat-To-Live, Work-For-Pay exchange. Not even a 'Job'.
Service staff are treated with the utmost dirt, no respect, no social ranking, no job ranking, no prospect, no pride. Pple immediately take for granted they are to be bullied. warned. sneered. or pitied. sympathised at best. Whatever the blame, its DEFINITELY their fault. DONT ARGUE.
It doesnt make a difference if the Service fellow could be earning more than the White Collar 'Executive', his/her 'status' will still be rated way down there.
I supposed thats why some ppl have TVL but they die die just wont drive, even if their pay is lower than their personal expectations or worse, standard of living.
That's right .
So when are on our steerings , show no sympathy .
Show no mercy....... :P
In the first place, are cabbies thoroughly trained to have the service mindset? NO. In fact, cabbies are the internal customers of whatever taxi operators they rent from yet are squeezed by them. No insurance, no welfare benefits, high rentals, loss of deposit when accident occurs etc.
Are Singaporeans a demanding lot? Yes. The slightest hint of a wrong route taken can get you a verbal tirade.
So lose-lose when it comes to service culture in taxis and unless the operators start taking care of cabbies, the evolution of a service mindset will never happen.

Hello i am a Singaporean also working as Service LIne what.. What's wrong with this job? Just learn how to tolerate can already..
cos in general, few take pride in their jobs. i mean even white collars. most do it for money without thinking how their jobs make a difference.
so the only measure of comparison is income. since service industry has low barriers, starting pay is low too. gives white collars an excuse to look down on them and relegate this industry to a low placing.
singapore is not egalitarian.

It all depends on your mindset when you're serving customers. When you're off duty, and as a customer you would want the best service treated to you. People go into this line not for the money or the job, it's for the passion. They get satisfaction when they serve their customers, and they are satisfied with the service. That's why NTUC(it's an example) aunties can work there for like 10-20years. Though it's tiring, it's heart warming as well.
