However, some are finding new ways to up earnings by sharing information on assignments.
Cabbies engaged with passengers are now using walkie—talkies to pass on new assignments to fellow drivers.
Even though taxi drivers’ earnings have gone up for two consecutive quarters last year from S$166 to S$180 per day, this is still less than what they were earning in 2008.
Taxi drivers such as Lee Say Keong have set up the network with 14 others.
Normally, they get their assignments from taxi companies, which charge 50 cents for each call answered.
Now they save on this amount, which translates to about S$30 more earnings for each driver monthly.
"Some other people might think it’s a very small amount, but for (us) taxi drivers, it’s very important. We don’t have CPF, we don’t have any incentive, and we don’t have any other bonuses," Mr Lee said.
Besides sharing information, the system also allows them to look out for one another.

Due to my nature , i was away leading the front line .
BMT time Platoon's Best recruit , Company's 3rd Best Recruits , above me was 2 regulars , knn lost to them , cos they knn super on the ball , 2 from Air Force .

Me diff frm u pool i prefer to work frm the sidelines or behind
the counter type like last time work in delifrance i was baker,
work in audi as co-ordinator juz quitely doing my job well so that
everytin goes smoothly. Lucky when onboard ship met a few gd
CO knoe im working type but dun like to show face 1 still gibe me
gd bonus but knn a few LJ types onli like those "paw lan pa" 1 i also
LL got do but do min cause bonus also the same if i ciong totally no
morale. SAF is like tat 1 tats y i left after 1yr of my 3yr extended contract.
Now driving taxi i feel so happy n motivated like when i 1st join the navy,
having lots of fun n knowing my hard work pays off for my effort.
