Wat yr views on S'pore with 20,000 over taxis n abt 150,000 S'poreans with taxi vocational licence? Seems like more n more ple is getting a taxi vocational licence as standby jus in case if they r retrenced.
I wun b surprised if 1 day tat f*cker Death Pit also drive taxi if he loses his job! He may sounds as he look down on taxi drivers but who knows? Since even ple who has much more qualifications(Masters n even PhD) than him is also a holder of a taxi vocational licence!
20,000 over taxis on S'pore roads jus nice 4 supply n demand?
The more the better.
now is juz nice olredi beri hard to survive
on those quiet nites liao. The only day our cab
population cannot handle is New Yr Eve
Ummm i dont think need to be concern until the day u cant earn a living to ply a cab........ I sure i dont care wheather 150,000 S'poreans with taxi vocational licence or even 200,000 by next year ![]()
don't worry , this figures worries the government more than anybody else !
question will be asked : " Why Singaporean men with good qualifications chose to become a cabby ? "
if they see the likes of our very own PhD driving a cab , they will be in for a electric shock !
Cos he only less than 35 years old !
9pm , u try Serangoon Road !
Then u come and tell me , 20,000 taxis enough for this people there ?
Never will be enough for the 6 million soon population .
it's the taxi price !
Peak hour , over flow of taxis .
After peak hour , superb shortage like at Tekka area .
Like on Saturday ! Where got enough ?
if taxi enough , ComfortDelgro call centre closed down liao .

when Poolman talks, really must listen. so many golden words n experience.
Little India is a place I wil turn a blind eye whenever i pass by tat area unless during peak hr.......... tat place is so dangerous also, those Indian nationals always anyhow dashed across the roads!
I bet with my life tat Spore only have max 30,000+ taxis on the roads. Mayb only close to 25,000 or 30,000. i tin tis kind of figures n issues, Poolman wil have answers.
Impossible it's more than 35,000!
CDG 12,000
TransCab 5000
Silvercab 1000
Smart 1000
Yellow 1000
Prime 1000
21,000 more like it ! Not 90,000 .
90,000 tvdl holder la ....
nobody wants your life if taxis really crosses the 35k line...
it all depends on how aggressive the taxis companies wanting to expand their fleets of current vehicles on the road.
taxis companies operate more like a rental company - the more vehicles they have, the more revenue will be generated - but also have to know the numbers of available full-time cabbies willingly to ply the road.
HK - 2x the size of Singapore... ( with many visitors from Mainland China daily ) has a cap (LIMIT) of 18,000 taxis licences. Singapore - now probably with 25k taxis already.
with more MRT stations on the pipeline - eventually many of the existing cabbies will find it hard to go by with years to come....
unless COE is at the HIGH END... if not, ppl still prefers their own transportations.
Look at the private estates - almost all parking spaces are occured with vehicles - if you need to drive past - you really must zig-zag to get thru ... but to the owners - free parking... and they preferred not to park within their landed properties (inside gates)... One good eg - Mariam Way..
Hence.. LTA have to decide on the "cap of taxis" required by the READY POPULATED ROADs in Singapore.... probably NEW ERP gantries will pop up here and there....
a forumer mentioned 90k cabs ??? errr.... this is very very unlikely... i bet my life on it...![]()

from the recent ST reports... ( i think 1 month ago )
the current taxis population is at 24.5k. ( and increasing gradually )
the Union taxis is current very aggressive on getting their fleet increasing to near 5k.
hence.. maybe the smaller companies may merged up to save on operational cost.
i think CDG have around 14,500. ( with thousands as weekends cabs - Thurs to Sunday drivers - mainly toyota crowns ).. many parked at Sin Ming Ave. (near my place at Bishan) ![]()

Poolman have answers ? he head of LTA (taxi department) huh ? hehe.. he only head of Liverpool (Singapore) football club... haha!![]()
Do you know guys .....
Those taxi companies will have worries coming with more cabs on the road .
If the market are really good , why did Smart & Silver not daring enough to launch new taxis ?
Except for Prime & TransCab coming with new taxis , partly was to replace the old Crowns .
Comfort & CityCab looked like coming out with new Sonata , but not true all are new population , all those old crowns were scrap for new sonata .
Imagine once Government come with new employment policy , to favour the locals , with slightly on par salary with the likes of taxi drivers , like $2500-$3000 per mth .
Their taxis will be stuck .
Cos most will jump into it ! Driving taxis ? Fuck la , u go ahead ! hahahah

More taxis licences was released on the road was to curb unemployment figures which was shooting higher and higher back in 2002-2003 period...
there are 6 local banks merged into 3 ( now remaining the DBS, OCBC & UOB still around )... the other banks got bought over ( OUB, Keppel-Tat Lee, POSB )... don't be surprised if there are ex-bankers, stock/forex brokers now plying the road as cabbies !!!
hence many ppl was retrenched... then came the SARs period - the economy growth dropped below negative.. RECESSION within RECESSION (mid 2003).
To curb with the expanding unemployment figures.... more taxis licences was released...
A win-win situation to the govt... No actual paid-jobs was created.... taxi cabbies need to pay for rental of cabs... and at that time - only 3 stat boards linked companies are in the industry, ie - Citycab, Comfort & SMRTs.... cabbies are giving revenues to govt instead.... !!!!!

Just do it lah -
Bro, u sounds like some 1 from Ministry for Trade. I suspect tat u r a Civil Servant last time. The way u gives facts n figures is really professional.
The way Poolman gives us valuable tips n advices is like some 1 seasoned n experienced in the taxi trade. But u r different, u a taxi driver meh? ![]()
Tat's y i like 2 spend my time in tis Forum, got so many interesting ple ard, can learn alot of tins. Can know 1st hand wat is happening on the roads etc etc
Never a civil servant...
just went thru the tough times and hereby replayed the past history to the forum readers..
I have to agree with you that there are many ppl holding on Vocational Taxi Licences (w/o even driving a cab in their life) as a possible fall back if they are jobless in future...( but the figures you mentioned could be in the high side )...
Taxi driving used to be a retirement job, 10 years ago... now, the whole picture had changed... it is now for people who has been retrenched... drivers are getting younger...
Consumers & economists alway mentioned that taxis are still insufficient during certain hours.... but... they don't bother to mention the hours after midnite (or even before midnite) when getting a trip may be almost impossible for some....
If LTA still unwilling to be a CAP (LIMIT) of taxis on Singapore roads... then it will eventually kills of the livelihood of many existing cabbies (with family to feed & school-going children)...
No more than average income self-employed job any more... Get some of their LTA officers to ply the road (from Monday to Sunday) - that is the BEST WAY to find out the actual demand.
