You are so wrong on this one:)
Jap man (expat) working here > very little conversation.
Jap ladies living here > so so. Maybe they are scared of my yakuza face. They will open up more if I tried harder though.
Those cute girls > They are very happy to have someone they can communicate with. I wish I could work day time so can be their tour guide :)
Jap man on biz trip > I always engage in interesting conversation with them. Broad topics
Jap ladies on biz trip > wahlau this one can even tell you their whole life stories.

Actually Poolman is right.
They feel a little superior when they can speak good english. Not all though but yeah, many Japs feel this way. They feel a little insulted when u speak broken jap. U can forget about practising ur jap on them. Make sure when u can open ur mouth, u can speak polite proper jap.
I dunno how many time I kanna from them for speakign broken jap during the time when I started to learn the language.
So now, unless that guy dunno english or speak only a little, I dun open my mouth to speak jap. Feel embarass....lol..........

Friend, you are right but Poolman is wrong.
He said :"Japanese they insist in Singapore , speak English , u can speak
lke Japanese , they still return u in English ." From my experience this is not true at all. (see my prev post)
Normally I do not speak in Japanese when they first board my cab.
Sometimes I just cut into their conversations to answer or give an explanation
in Japanese. They were usually a little shock.
日本人?They always asked if I'm Japanese.
Then they will say "you a waste driving a taxi" も

you can speak japanese? then yes they are right. driving taxi is a waste.
For me , its only english and mandarin. if i were to know french , german , korean , japanese.. u think i will be a TD?
Whether there is a need to be multi lingual is not important.
Important things as a TD are your routes. thats all u ever need to know
I love the Japanese and their liver belly, belly park, lee ann court and curry bean.
