Today, I am going to review one of my favorite Japanese souvenirs,Kamome no Tamago. My former supervisor was up in Northern Japan doing some earthquake cleanup recently and kindly brought me back a box. I think he remembered that I liked them because I asked him to pick me up a box 2 years ago when he last made a trip up to that area.
I first had Kamome no Tamago a couple years ago, when I was visiting my host family in Nagoya during one of my summers off from college. My host mother’s friend had gotten a box from her family living in Iwate Prefecture. Needless to say, it was love at first bite. I could not remember the name of this dessert for the life of me until I was served it again when I began living in Toyama Prefecture as a participant on the JET Program. I always make a point of getting it when I see it around — although it is pretty rare to see it anywhere outside of the Tohoku Region of Japan unless there is a regional fair of sorts at the department store or supermarket.
Ok, now on to the review. Kamome no Tamago literally translates to Seagull’s Egg in English. This souvenir is specific to Iwate Prefecture, aside from being available at regional fairs at supermarkets/department stores as I mentioned above. As the name of this souvenir implies, this dessert is sculpted to look like a seagull egg.
They really do a good job of mimicking the seagull egg with this dessert. The “white” of the egg consists of the outside layer of white chocolate and the beginning of the cake-like manjuu outside. The “yolk” consists of a delicious mess of white bean paste and sugar. White bean paste unlike red bean paste has a very mild taste. I don’t think that white bean paste would offend red bean paste haters. If you want a Japanese dessert that would appeal to the Western palate, I believe this is the one to buy.
Basically this is a white bean paste manjuu covered in white chocolate. You can’t go too much wrong with that unless you hate Japanese desserts. But then we can’t be friends, can we?
This dessert is so popular that it has inspired knock-offs all throughout Japan. The most notable one I have run across is Raicho no Tamago or Thunderbird’s Egg, which can be found in Toyama Prefecture. I don’t recommend it though. In this case, Iwate Prefecture’s original Kamome no Tamago wins out.
