“Yakushima Sashimi”
Yakushima Island has much more to offer than just long treks across sublime parks, mountains and along almost untouched beaches. It is also a place in which to enjoy culinary delights year round.
The island is almost self-sufficient in as far as food is concerned. Fruits produeced include passion fruits (early to late summer) and local Tankan Oranges (February to March) at ridiculously low prices at many supermarkets and farmer's stands.
Vegetable content in the stores is similar to that seen in Okinawa, and includes goya and edible tree shoots, but the rare treats come from the surrounding seas and offer up such rarities as:
Kame-no-te (Turtle Paw), or “Se” in the local dialect, is served boiled with rice in “Kame-no-te-gohan”.Yomegasa (Bride's Umbrella) are eaten raw or grilled while the Yaku Saba (Yakushima Mackerel) are served as “Kubiore Saba”, meaning that their necks are broken to preserve the freshness - until they are served up as sashimi.Yakushima-age on the other hand are deep-fried patties made with minced flying fish as Tobiuo (flying fish) are a specialty of the island. Available from Spring to Summer, one has to sample it as sashimi to call himself / herself a Yakushima Island specialist!
Recommended local restaurants (especially for fish in all forms) include the Yakushima Tourism Center (there is a local restaurant on the second floor specializing in mackerel and flying fish) and it can be found at 891-4205 Kagoshima Ken, Kumage Gun, Yakushima Cho, Miyanoura, 799 (just by the beach). Call to make reservations with business hours running from: 08:00~1900.
Tsuruya, for lunch only offers superlative local sashimi sets and a whole mitake shochu range and is at 891-4311 Kagoshima Ken, Kumage Gun, Yakushima Cho, Anbo, 410-156 -Tel.: .

“Local Ecological Bus Stop!”
Activities are numerous in Yakushima and everyone should find at least something that interests them according to his / her age, fitness level and personal tastes! The most popular at present are the YNC Eco-Tour and the NCP Eco-Tour: both offer five different courses along which visitors can view many animals and plants up close, as well as World Heritage sites. Other eco-tours are also available for canoeing, mountain stream climbing, caving, snorkeling, etc.
For inquiries contact the Yakushima Nature Activity Center and plan on spending roughly eight hours with them for a fee of 15,000 yen including lunch; Tel: (reservations required).
Alternately, Nature Coordinate Pro (also taking about eight hours will offer tours for 14,000 yen - again including lunch but with a minimum number of people required in each group: Tel: (reservations required).
For an excursion tour bus, try the (reservations required) Yakushima Kotsu. Tel: 09974-6221 which leaves Yakushima Iwasaki Hotel at 08:20 and heads to Senpiro Falls-Anbo Honsha Srine-Tashiro Bekkan-Miyanoura Port-Shitogo Gajumaru En (Banyan Tree Park)-Yakushima Environment and Culture Center (or Yakushima Museum)-Yaku Shrine-Yakushima Airport-Anbo Port-Botanical Research Park-Yakusugi land-Kigen Sugi-and back at 17:50. For those staying at Anbo plan on 18:20 and Miyanoura – 18:50. All for a fare somewhere between 3,600 and 4,100 yen
Art is an aspect of culture also represented on Yakushima and is home to many artists and craftsmen. One particularly recommended artist making local pottery known as Yakushima Yaki Shinyakugama can be found at 891-4406 Kagoshima Ken, Kumage Gun, Yakushima Cho, Hirauchi, 630-4. Tel / Fax: , (night time) - to join one of their pottery classes.

Shiratani Unsuikyo is located 30 minutes from Miyanoura Port by car. Alternatively, there four buses from Miyanoura Port (530 yen, 35 minutes).
The park itself consists of a number of hiking circuits running along a ravine with Japanese and English signs throughout. The recommended circuits vary in length from one to five hours long, but you are free (there is a 200 yen yet to pay as contribution for the upkeep of the National Park) to wander around and choose your own route among the paths. Note that the park is closed from December to February because of snow fall. It could also be closed in inclement weather as it is said to rain "35 days a month" here. Precipitation in Yakushima ranks among the highest in the world at 4,000 to 10,000 mm each year. There are in fact dry periods in autumn and winter, while the heaviest downpours occur in spring and summer - often causing landslides.
You will discover all kinds of plants, flowers and mushrooms on the lower reaches of the forest floor depending upon the season. These provide ample food to semi-wild deer (yakushika) and monkeys (yakuzaru) which in turn leads the residents of Yakushima, when asked about their population, to invariably answer with a grin: 20,000 people, 20,000 deer and 20,000 monkeys!
Yakushima is not all mountains, trees and deer though as it is also the home of some stunning waterfalls that spill directly into the surrounding seas, such as Torouki, Senpiro and the Ohko Falls.
Will be there for one day, one night staying there,
and leaving at noon the next day from this island Yakushima
