Beppu Onsen (Hot Spring)
Beppu city in Oita prefecture is home to Japan's largesthot spring resort, both with regard to the number of water sources and the volume of water gushing from them.
Among some 3,000 sources withing the city, eight particularly famous ones are collectively called "Beppu Hatto"--referring to the onsen found at Beppu, Hamawaki, Kankaiji, Horita, Myoban, Kan'nawa, Shibaseki, and Kamegawa--each awash with bathing opportunities, and together forming a heavenly destination for serious hot spring enthusiasts.
"Jigoku Meguri Tour" (hell tour) takes you on a bus ride that connects each of the eight hot springs, likening them to a hell bubbling with scalding hot water, and puffing out incessant stream of burning smoke. The wide difference in mineral content means each hot spring features a distinct water color, ranging from milky white to aquamarine blue, and blood-red.
The idea of having a female guide narrating on a tour bus is said to have originated with "Jigoku Meguri Tour." A brainchild of a local entrepreneur of Beppu city, the idea quickly gained traction across the country, and is now a common sight throughout Japan.
