  Japan’s first budget airline, Peach, was unveiled on Tuesday. The name of the airline is supposed to “invoke positive images such as youthfulness, energy, generosity and longevity”, according to the airline. “The name Peach was chosen to reflect our mission of becoming a completely new type of airline that links destinations in Japan and Japan with Asia. Our promise is to provide safe, low-cost travel 365 days of the year, making air travel easier and more accessible,” said Peach Aviation CEO, Shinichi Inoue.

  Strangely, the color scheme of the airline’s interior is not peach-hued, but rather a light shade of magenta. The outfits for cabin crew are surprisingly casual by Japanese standards, with the women cabin crew outfitted in – gasp – trousers instead of the traditional skirt, scarf and heels combo favored by the country’s two dominant airlines: Japan Airlines and ANA.

  But the future of Peach may be anything but rosy: it is kicking off flight operations just as the number of travelers from overseas destinations has tumbled following the March 11 earthquake and the resulting nuclear disaster. How the airline manages to woo tourists from the rest of Asia back to Japan is key. The low-cost carrier, affiliated with ANA, will start flights from its home base – Kansai International Airport in Osaka. Flight services to Sapporo of northern Japan and to Fukuoka of southern Japan is expected to start no later than March 2012, followed by flight to Seoul’s Incheon airport in May 2012.

  Peach aims to grab 6 million customers with 16 jets five years after its launch. If it fails to achieve this target, it might just have to change its name to…yep, you guessed it: Lemon.

  Seeing Japan's fabled snow monkeys is much easier in the world of guidebooks than reality. Their natural habitat lies deep within the mountains of Nagano and requires a serious journey. After the one and a half hours on the bullet train from Tokyo to Nagano, there is more than an hour on a rickety local line, a long bus ride to the trailhead, capped off by a mile-long hike up snow-covered mountain trail.
  
  So Jigokudani -- "Hell Valley" -- isn’t Japan's most convenient vacation spot. However, the nihon-zaru -- a.k.a Macaca fuscata, a.k.a. the Japanese macaque, a.k.a. the "snow monkey" -- has an inordinate ability to draw the world's attention for a single and very specific reason: their distinctively human-like habit of climbing into natural hot springs to warm up during the winter months.

  Jigokudani's Yaen-Koen ("Monkey Park") is basically the only place you can observe this behavior in the wild. If you've ever seen a documentary or photos of monkeys in hot springs, chances are they were taken here.

  Inside the Yaen-Koen

  Could this monkey be contemplating the true meaning of snow?

  In spite of its name, the Monkey Park isn’t a zoo. There are no cages or walls. Aside from a visitor's center, the only real facility is a roomy stone bathtub built atop a natural hot spring. (Sorry, humans not allowed in.)

  The monkeys don't even live on the premises. Like tiny, furry versions of salarymen, they commute. Attracted by little more than the chance to warm up in the tub and the occasional snack, they descend from the snowy mountain peaks around 9am and return home around 4pm, which also, conveniently, squares with the business hours of the park. And since monkeys don't take holidays, neither does the park. It's open year round.

  Young monkeys chase each other around the park, playing games of tag that quickly degenerate into rough-and-tumble wrestling matches. Adults tend to keep to themselves aside from the occasional territorial spat.

  But in the bathtub, all the normal rules of monkey society are temporarily suspended. It’s an all-inclusive, full-time relaxation zone -- no tussles allowed. Watching the park's alpha male -- fancifully dubbed the Dragon King -- dozing blissfully in the bath surrounded by his harem of females, it's hard not to feel a little envious.

  The Do's and Dont's of the Monkey Park

  "Forgot your bathing suit? Don't worry, we're all monkeys here"

  The park's monkeys are completely used to humans and walk freely among (and occasionally on) the visitors. For the most part they all but ignore people, but there are a few rules to keep in mind. Remember the old saying "monkey see, monkey do?" Now's your chance to experience it from the other side of the equation.

  Don't pet or try to touch the monkeys. Never stare into their eyes or bare your teeth, even in a smile, as these behaviors are considered acts of aggression in the monkey world. As the Yaen-Koen site says: "The monkeys here are not lovable animals. If they feel a threat to their lives, they will try to scare, or bite. Observe quietly and as far back as possible."
  
  If you follow the monkey rules, you might even make a fuzzy friend or two. Early one morning in the women's outdoor bath at Korakukan Onsen, a popular (if rustic) spa located just down the hill from Monkey Park, I found myself face to face with a monkey apparently out for a private dip before heading to the Monkey Park's more crowded bath.

  Making sure to follow monkey etiquette, I stepped past and slipped into the tub right next to her. Sharing the bath with a distant primate relative made my day -- and made me realize that when it comes to relaxation, perhaps humans and monkeys have more in common than you'd think.

  From Tokyo, take the JR Shinkansen to Nagano. Then, switch to the Nagano Dentetsu line to Yudanaka station. From Yudanaka station, take a taxi, or a bus bound for Kanbayashi Onsen to the trailhead to Jigokudani Yaen Koen.

  Nagano's Zenkoji Temple (善光寺, ZenkÅ�ji) in is one of the most important and popular temples in Japan. It was founded in the 7th century and stores the first Buddhist statue ever to be brought into Japan when Buddhism was first introduced in the 6th century. The original statue is hidden while a copy of it is shown to the public every six years for a few weeks. The next opportunity will be in 2015. The significance of Zenkoji to the development of Nagano was instrumental: many major Japanese cities have evolved either from castle towns, harbor towns or temple towns. In the case of Nagano, it grew from a temple town which developed around its temple of great importance, Zenkoji.   Incense smoke from the lion incense burner brings blessings Niomon Gate Most recently rebuilt in 1707, Zenkoji's main hall is nicely ornamented and contains various Buddhiststatues. A fee is required to enter the hall's inner chamber, where visitors can take a closer look at the temple's main altar. In the basement of the inner chamber is an underground passage, which visitors walk through in complete darkness in search of the "key to paradise". The key is attached to a wall along the corridor and is believed to grant salvation to anybody who touches it. A short walk behind the main hall stands a relatively recently built pagoda which houses the Zenkoji History Museum. The museum showcases a collection of intricately carved statues of different Buddhas and Bodhisattva, allowing one to appreciate up-close the characteristics of each. There is also a display of 100 Rakan, the disciples of Buddha.   Zenkoji History Museum South of the main hall is the Sanmon Gate, the temple's main gate which dates back to 1750. This designated important cultural property can be entered from mid March through November and houses statues of the Monju Bodhisattva and the four heavenly kings (Shitenno). Its second story offers views of the temple approach. Just outside the Sanmon Gate stand one large and six medium sized statues of Jizo Bodhisattva. The temple approach leading up to this point is lined with shops selling local specialties and souvenirs, as well as small restaurants. At the southern end of the approach is Niomon Gate, the outer gate of the temple which is guarded by a pair of Nio Guardians. The many abodes lining the streets parallel to the main temple approach indicate just how well received Zenkoji has traditionally been. Today, accommodation at these temple lodgings (shukubo) is still popular, especially for those who would like to visit the temple at sunrise to participate in its daily morning service (Oasaji).   Seasons are a main theme in the Japanese culture. Flowers are like mirrors to the seasons, reflecting the passage of time. Fittingly, flower viewing is a very popular activity in Japan as most prominently seen in the annual festivities surrounding the cherry blossoms, but not limited to them. The following chart shows the approximate blooming periods for some of the most popular flowers in Japan. One point to note is that because Japan extends north to south for some 3500 kilometers, a particular flower species might blossom at differing times across regions with varying climate. The chart serves as a rough reference for the country in general. Kamakura Meigetsuin Temple (more details) Known for: Hydrangea and irises Meigetsuin is also known as "Ajisaidera", meaning "Hydrangea Temple". This is because hydrangea bloom in abundance at the temple during the rainy season around June, and they usually attract large numbers of visitors. Kamakura Hase Temple Known for: Hydrangea Hasedera is famous for its huge statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. Every summer, huge crowds come to thetemple to visit its hydrangea garden. Around Osaka Osaka Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park Known for: Cherry blossoms, roses, tulips Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park located in Osaka is a great place to view cherry blossoms. The large park hosted the International Garden and Greenery Exposition in 1990, and features many gardens of various countries. Shikoku Kochi Makino Botanical Garden Known for: Irises and various flowers Makino Botanical Garden in Kochi includes extensive walking paths, outdoor parks and a greenhouse. The spacious garden has various flowers on display.   Kitano Tenmangu Shrine (北野天満宮, Kitano TenmangÅ«) is one of the most important of several hundred shrines across Japan that are dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, a scholar and politician who was unfairly exiled by his political rivals. A number of disasters were attributed to Michizane's vengeful spirit after his death in exile, and these shrines were built to appease him. Sugawara Michizane is associated with Tenjin, the kami ("Shinto god") of education. Consequently, many students visit Kitano Tenmangu to pray for success in their studies. The shrine can become especially crowded with students during exam times and school trip seasons.   Plum Grove Michizane loved plum trees, and one tree, called tobiume or flying plum tree, is said to have followed him from Kyoto to his exile in Kyushu. Because of this, a plum tree can always be found standing in front of the offering hall of Tenmangu shrines. In addition to the tobiume tree, Kitano Tenmangu features an entire grove of nearly 2000 trees that bloom from February to March. The shrine hosts a special tea ceremony, called Baikasai, in this plum grove every February 25th, attended by maiko and geiko of the nearby Kamishichiken geiko district.

  Ume is distributed widely in East Asia but its place of origin is in north central China. There are 2000 year old records of the medicinal use of ume. Most of the time ume is translated as Japanese plum and is often marketed as such, but it is really a species of apricot. 1500 years ago ume made its way into Japan in the form of a medicine called Woomei. At the same time Woomei was introduced, trees were also imported. Over time these trees adapted to the Japanese climate and growing conditions to create new species. Japanese ume are sourer and contain higher levels of citric acid than their Chinese counterparts.  Today there are over 20 kinds of edible ume in Japan including the very high quality Nanko-ume. Its pulp is thick and soft and contains a high amount of organic acid. This species of tree also produces a large yield of very high quality fruit every year. Southern Wakayama is the birth place and the leading producer of Nanko-ume. In 2006, 67,000 tons of southern Wakayama’s ume reached the market accounting for approximately 60% of Japan’s harvest. Kishu Umeboshi and Kishu Umeshu (Ume liqueur) are both made with Nanko-ume.

  
  

  Japan has a long history of preserving ume by drying and salting. This form of pickle is called umeboshi and was eaten for a variety of reasons. It was used to prevent food poisoning and food from going bad. This proves the antibacterial properties of the benzaldehyde contained in umeboshi.  The high amount of citric acids helps burn lactic acid that builds up in muscles during physical activity. During the warring era in Japan (16th century) soldiers had to wear armor and helmets weighing up to 30~40kg. Warriors are said to have eaten umeboshi to build up energy before a battle and to help recover after fighting. Other people also ate umeboshi everyday		Kisyu Nanko Ume.

  Dr. Utsunomiya from the Wakayama Prefecture Medical Science University has been doing detailed research into the positive effects of umeboshi on the human body. One of the leading causes of stomach cancer in Japan is caused by Helicobacter pylori and umeboshi was found to decrease its numbers. Umeboshi also was found to help stop the hardening of arteries and lower blood sugar levels. There has also been research done on the antioxidant capabilities of flavonoid contained in umeboshi. Some studies have shown that umeboshi obstructs the oxygen flow inside cancer cells disrupting their organizational powers.

  
  
  

  â–  The Manufacturing Process of Umeboshi Harvest takes place in the middle of June when the fruit starts to turn yellow. After they are washed and mixed with salt. The amount of salt is about 20% of the weight of the fruit. After about one month, near the end of July, the umeboshi are laid out to dry in the sun. For this area of Japan it is a very famous and distinct sign of summer to see the thousands of ume laid out to dry in every farmer’s yard. Once the umeboshi are dried they are packed into barrels and taken to the local processing area. There they are washed, sorted, desalinized, and seasoned. Great care and pride is taken in the production and seasoning process to bring the highest class of umeboshi to the international market.		Mixing with salt
