  Hells (Jigoku)

  Pudding, made by hot spring steam, are sold at some hells The "hells" (地ç�„, jigoku) of Beppu are eight spectacular hot springs for viewing rather than bathing. They are presented to visitors in a rather touristy fashion, which might not appeal to everybody. Six of the hells are located in the Kannawa district and two in the more remote Shibaseki district. Kannawa District   Umi Jigoku One of the more beautiful hells, the "sea hell" features a pond of boiling, blue water. In its spacious gardens, there are a few secondary, orange colored hells and a large, clear water pond with lotus flowers whose large leaves are strong enough to carry small children.   Oniishibozu Jigoku This hell is named after the mud bubbles, which emerge from boiling mud pools and look like the shaven heads of monks. Besides the mud pools, it features a foot bath with clear water. Adjacent to the hell is a public bath with multiple pools that costs an additional 600 yen.   Shiraike Jigoku True to its name, the "white pond hell" features a pond of hot, milky water. The pond is surrounded by a nice garden and a small, run-down aquarium that has seen better days.   Kamado Jigoku The "cooking pot hell" features several boiling ponds and a flashy demon statue as cook. On the grounds, visitors can drink the hot spring water, enjoy hand and foot baths, inhale the hot spring steam and try various snacks cooked or steamed by the hot spring.   Oniyama Jigoku A large number of crocodiles are bred and kept on the grounds of the "monster mountain hell".   Yama Jigoku The "mountain hell" features small ponds of steaming hot water and a run-down zoo with large animals in small cages. Shibaseki District   Chinoike Jigoku The "blood pond hell" features a pond of hot, red water and a large souvenir shop. It is one of the more photogenic of the eight hells.   Tatsumaki Jigoku The "spout hell" features a boiling hot geyser, which erupts every 30-40 minutes for about 6-10 minutes. A stone plate above the geyser hinders it to reach its full height. A short walking trail leads up the forested slope in the back of the hell grounds.

  The mountains of Kirishima are an important site in the creation mythology of Japan. It was in this area that the god Ninigi no Mikoto, grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, is said to have descended from heaven to rule over the earth. Ninigi no Mikoto landed on nearby Mt. Takachiho-no-mine bringing with him the three imperial regalia: the sword, the mirror and the gem; symbols of the imperial family. He eventually married a local princess, becoming mortal in the process, and established the lineage of Japanese Emperors. Devoted to Ninigi no Mikoto, Kirishima Shrine was built during the Muromachi Period on a different site from where it stands today. Since then it has been destroyed numerous times by volcanic eruptions, but always rebuilt. The current shrine was constructed in 1715 where it survives to this day. Its large, beautiful buildings are surrounded by forest and have been declared important cultural property.

  breakfast at the ryokan

  still jet lagged and woke up before 5am, after a while I got up and started to do some yoga, listening to the CD from my yoga teacher. Breakfast at 8am in the next room, there was a different kind of tofu, soup, rice, fish, pickled vegetables etc, it was always presented in a pleasing way, tasted good too.
  
  The day started out sunny, but not hot. After breakfast, we headed out to visit the 8 hells of Beppu. These are the hot springs from the volcanic geology around the area. A 2000 Yen ticket covers all 8, or you can pay about 400 for each. We started with the Sea Hell, where there was a pool of light cobalt blue water, with hot steam coming out from around its edge, as the steam get blown around by the wind, the scenery changed. It was quite beautiful.

   There was a shrine near by, with red tori gate and columns, contrasting with the blue water and white steam, and greenery. At each Hell, there were places for people to sit and soak their feet in the hot springs. Also food cooked with the heat of the hot springs, usually eggs, boiled, but also yams, and various steamed breads. At the Sea Hell there were also lotus ponds, and a green house, where the Victoria Amazonica large flat lotus leaves float and grow in hot spring waters. There were pictures of kids (up to 20kg) standing on these large flat lotus leaves, but we didn't see a life demonstration.
  
  The 2nd Hell was a bubbling hell, with thick dark gray colored mud making large bubbles and gurgling sounds in several ponds. The hell is named Oniishi Bozu because the bubbles resembled the shaved head of monks! They were very cute.

  The first 6 hells were grouped in one location, so we just walked to the next one: the Mountain Hell, where hot steams are coming up from a hillside of rocks, there was some clear water, but mostly you just see many vents with steams. At this Hell, they had a small zoo, an elephant, 2 llmas, some monkeys, a hippo (wow it had a big mouth, waiting for people to feed him potatos), flamingos, and peacocks.
  
  The 4th hell is the “oven” hell, with several different ponds of bubbling mud, one of them was reddish. We sat down at the foot spa and soaked our feet for a while, and ate an egg from the vendor there. It was relaxing since we were on our own schedule, instead of taking a tour which would have visited all 8 in 2.5 hours (we took almost twice as long).

  

  
  
  The next (daemon mountain) hell had a farm of crocodiles, supposedly they like the hot spring water. The water in this pond looked blue, but is supposed to change color during the year, there were pictures of green water shown there.
  Then there was the White Pond Hell, where they had several small aquariums with different fishes. The water here was a creamy white with a little blue tinge.
  Then we took a taxi and got to the Blood Pool Hell, where they had a large store and the pond was very large too, it had reddish color, with steam floating from its surface with nice green plants on the hillside behind the pool. There was a light drizzle, but nothing which required any rain gear. The last hell was a natural geyser which erupts every 40 minutes or so.

   Seats were arranged in theater style to its side so people could wait for it to go off. It had a wall of rocks behind and over where it erupts. so it can't to up unlimited, but it's not a very big geyser. Probably the least impressive of all the hells. But they had a good variety, and each one had something to see beside just the pool, I have to say it was very well designed, and makes a great day trip.
  
  We got some snacks at the geyser hell, and then went to the local bamboo craft center via taxi. They had some really well made objects made from bamboo, an archway, which gave the illusion of motion when you walk in it. There were fine art objects made from bamboo, and an exhibit of several different kinds of bamboo, including one called the Tiger Bamboo, with lovely patterns on its skin.
  We decided to visit a store selling bamboo crafts in town, and bought some souvenirs. Then it was time to head back to the ryokan, and rest before our dinner.

   What's special about this one is some up-close mud pools. Every few seconds a bubble would make its way to the surface. It's called Oniishibozu Jigoku.
