Yesterday we went to Beppu Beach Sand Bath. It was my first real sand bath. I had been to another place with a sand bath before, but there you had to dig yourself in. It was uncomfortable and I didn't really enjoy it. I was looking forward to the real experience.
Ready to be dug in.
The onsen provides you with a yukata, which you have to wear in the sand bath. Men and women bathe together.
Bathing.
A sand bath is like a sauna: you are supposed to sweat. However, when we arrived we were warned that due to the cold it probably wouldn't be as hot as we'd expect it to be. I did expect to sweat, but it was more like a warm comfortable blanket. I even dozed off for a while.
From the bath you have a nice view of Beppu Bay.
We bathed for about fifteen minutes. When you get out of the sand bath you have to take a shower to wash off the sand. After that you can use the normal bath to relax some more.
The bath.
They also have a foot bath.
