This area have much rain throughout the year. So often, the peaks have fog. The peaks look like islands on the sea of fog.
The name "Kirishima" has come from the scenery. ("Kiri" means "fog", and "shima" means "island".)

It is a Shinto shrine and is at the southwestern foot of Takachiho-no-mine peak.
It is located about 7 km northeast of Kirishima-Jingu station on JR Nippo Line.
It is said that the shrine was founded in the 6th century.
But the shrine had often been destroyed by the eruption of Mount Kirishima, and the current shrine was constructed in 1484.
The buildings were rebuilt in 1715.

Another rubblist talk that oldman before told Japan stopped taking migrants, that why Japan ended up as like today.
Another minute, another minister not long ago, said they are trying to get more tourists over here, and they are doing some planning to bring somemore here but not much but a little...just those few man made attractions can bring how many?
The area of Kirishima was the first to be designated as a national park in 1934 in Japan and is one of the most richly diverse national parks. It is a place of scenic mountain beauty where there is a concentration of volcanoes and crater lakes such as Mt. Karakuni (1,700m and the highest), Mt. Takachiho and Mt. Shinmoe. It is blessed with virgin forests of chinkapin, evergreen oak and red pine, and pristine wilderness, as evident in the song "Hana wa Kirishima (Kirishima is full of flowers)", and in the mountains you can enjoy anything from light walking, hiking to serious trekking. The area is legendary in the ancient mythology of Japan, and you can also see famous sites associated with the legends and traditional performances.
Kirishima Mountain Ranges are dotted with forests inhabited by wild birds and cobalt blue lakes and the beauty of the mountains can be enjoyed throughout the year. In particular, springtime when Kyushu Azalea are blooming, early summer when new greenery is sparkling and fall when crimson foliage is abundant are the best times for hiking and trekking.

So Kirishima, what to see?
The most beautiful plateau in Japan
Ebino Plateau is located at an elevation of 2,450 meters and surrounded by the Kirishima Mountains, which include Mount Karakuni. The plateau’s summers are cool with temperatures between 17 °C and 23 °C; therefore, it is an ideal place for a summer retreat. The area is well equipped with tennis courts, nature trails and camping sites, so the whole family can enjoy the outdoors. In winter it becomes a winter wonderland with snow covered trees. You can enjoy winter sports your heart’s content. It also has a large artificial skating rink. At the end of August, the Japanese Silver Grass on the plateau changes color to ‘ebi-iro’ (reddish –purple). The plateau then looks like it has been carpeted in red. The view from Mount Karakuni is especially beautiful.
Ebino Plateau is located about 16 km west-southwest of Kobayashi city and about 60 km west of Miyazaki city.
Mount Kirishima is an active volcano, and has many peaks around the border between Miyazaki Prefecture and Kagoshima Prefecture.
Ebino Plateau is located at the northwest part of the volcano, and is on a basin surrounded by some peaks of the volcano.
And it is about 5 square kilometers wide.
Karakunidake peak (1,700 meters, the highest peak) is to the southeast, Koshikidake (1,301 meters) is to the northeast, and Shiratoriyama (1,363 meters) is to the north.
The altitude of the plateau is about 1,200 meters.
Some round crater lakes are dotted, and some walking trails to visit them are set up.
Main three lakes are Byakushi-ike, Rokkan'non-miike, and Fudou-ike.
The length of the walking trail touring about the lakes is about 6 km, and it starts from the resort town with a few hotels, restaurants, and information center.
On this plateau, we can see the various alpine plants.
Kirishima is an active volcanic mountain range that lies on the border between Miyazaki and Kagoshima Prefectures. It is made up of mountains, highlands, volcanic lakes and hot springs and offers good hiking through beautiful mountainous surroundings. Due to recent eruptions by Mount Shinmoedake, some of the hiking trails are currently closed.
The mountains of Kirishima play an important role in Japanese mythology. They are said to be the site where the god Ninigi no Mikoto, grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, was sent to rule over the earth and establish the lineage of Japanese Emperors. At the top of Mount Takachiho-no-mine you can see the spear sunk in the mountaintop, which Ninigi no Mikoto used to descend to earth.
Ebino Kogen and Kirishima Onsen are the two most prominent resort towns in the Kirishima area. Ebino Kogenon the Miyazaki side of the border, is a small village with a couple of hotels in a highland area surrounded by mountains and volcanic lakes. On the Kagoshima side is Kirishima Onsen, a more developed hot spring town with good baths and nice views over Kagoshima Prefecture.
