  Major airports, highways and railway stations in Japan were crowded with holidaymakers Saturday as the country entered the Golden Week spring holiday season.

   

  According to Narita International Airport Corp., the number of departures from the airport for overseas destinations will reach about 45,000 on Saturday alone while arrivals will peak on May 6 at about 51,000.

  It expects total departures and arrivals on international flights during Golden Week to come to about 753,000.

  Dazaifu

  Dazaifu City, situated in central Fukuoka, is where "Dazaifu," the regional government for the entire Kyushu region, was established approximately 1,300 years ago. The city, together with Mt. During the entrance examination season each year, young people from all parts of Japan preparing for these examinations and their parents come to the shrine to pray for success in the examination or academic achievement. The approach to the shrine is lined with teahouses selling 'umegae-mochi,' a local specialty rice-cake that is believed to ward off illness. The shrine is famous for its plum trees. The 'Tobi-ume' (flying plum) trees, which, according to legend, flew to Dazaifu from Kyoto after Sugawara Michizane, come into bloom earlier than other plum trees every year. The Houmotsu- den, a treasure house containing cultural properties of the national treasure class, is also located on the premises.  One hundred ceremonies are conducted at the shrine each year. These ceremonies include Onisube, Usokae, and, the most important ceremony at this shrine, Jinkoshiki-taisai (Grand Festival). Among them is the Onobori ceremony, which has been designated a National Intangible Property. In October 2005, Japan's fourth national museum, the Kyushu National Museum, opened near the shrine. Based on the unique concept of "understanding the formation of Japanese culture from an Asian historical perspective," various exhibitions have been held.   Kitakyushu

  Kita-Kyushu is located in the northern part of Fukuoka and is the gateway to the Kyushu region. Separated by the Kanmon Straits, the city faces Shimonoseki of Yamaguchi, the westernmost city on Honshu. While Kita-Kyushu has developed into the largest heavy-industry city in the Kyushu region, the city has some of the major sightseeing spots in the region. They include the Moji Port (designated as a special export port in the Meiji Era), Kokura (a castle town that was the starting point of the Nagasaki-kaido Highway), and Yahata- Higashida with Space World and the Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History and Human History. It is a sightseeing city where more than 10 million tourists visit each year.  The Moji Port flourished as the gateway of trade with the continent in the early 20th century. After being repaired and renovated, the western buildings that tell us of the prosperity of the port in those days have been gathered into one area. This area is called the Moji-ko (Moji Port) Retro Area. Nowadays, many Japanese and foreign tourists visit here to enjoy strolling around romantic streets with the port town atmosphere, listening to the sound of the waves.  In the Kokura district, with an atmosphere of an old castle town, are Kokura Castle, known as a great castle built in the 'kara-zukuri' style, and the Kokura Castle Garden. The garden was made by reproducing a feudal lord's garden, the study house of a samurai residence, etc. at the remains of 'shimo- yashiki' (entertainment residence) of the owner of the Kokura Castle.   Kurume

  Kurume, in the southwestern part of Fukuoka, is a castle town lying in the Chikushi Plain surrounded by the Minou Mountain Range and nurtured by the Chikugo-gawa River. There are many old temples and shrines, including Suiten-gu Shrine, which is used to worship the God of Water and the God for Easy Childbirth by the public, and Bairin-ji Temple, noted for its plum trees. They form a temple town.  Kurume is well-known for its Kurume- gasuri, which has been designated a National Important Intangible Asset and a National Traditional Craft Product. Kurume-gasuri is an indigo cotton fabric with white splashed patterns. It is believed that Kurume-gasuri originated in the latter part of the 18th century. It was warmly accepted throughout Japan as the material for casual working clothes for the common people. Rantai lacquerware is also a product indigenous to Kurume. This is traditional bamboo ware woven from bamboo grown in the area and coated repeatedly with lacquer. The bamboo ware is available in many varieties, ranging from chopsticks to chairs.  The Kurume azalea, which is the flower of the city, is adored by people in Japan and overseas. In bloom from late April to mid-May, these beautiful flowers can be enjoyed in many places in the city such as the Kurume Shinrin Tsutsuji Koen (Kurume Forest Azalea Park) and the Kurume World Tsutsuji (azalea) Center.

  Yanagawa

  Yanagawa in the southwestern part of Fukuoka lies in a rural area near the mouth of the Chikugo-gawa River that empties into the Sea of Ariake. A cruise on a poled boat called "Donko" down the river is the chief attraction of this old castle town. The boat goes through the moat around the old Yanagawa Castle, with the willow trees on its banks reflecting in the water. As the boat slowly goes downstream, passengers can enjoy a view of red brick warehouses of the early 20th century and traditional Japanese-style storehouses with 'namako' walls, covered with square tiles jointed with raised plaster. The cruise takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes. The boatman's masterly use of his pole is a sight to see. He addresses the passengers from time to time, briefly explaining popular sightseeing spots on the way. The boat service is available all year round. Seasonal flowers such as cherry and peach blossoms and irises please the eyes of the passengers. In winter, the passengers can warm themselves with 'hibachi' braziers on 'kotatsu' (Japanese heating equipment) boats.  Boats for clam- digging or sightseeing are put in service on the Sea of Ariake.   Nakasu is Kyushu’s number one entertainment district. The area developed around the Nakashima bridge, which was built by Fukuoka’s first feudal lord, Nagamasa Kuroda, in 1600 to connect the Fukuoka and Hakata areas. In the latter Edo period, this strategic location was put to good use as the area developed into an entertainment district popular with both the samurai of Fukuoka and the merchants of Hakata. The merchants and samurai may have long since disappeared, but the number of nightspots in Nakasu has only grown. It has also long-served as a launch pad for new cultural movements, from the theatre popular in the Meiji period to the literature boom of the late 1890s and the appearance of cinemas in the 1910s. This month we take a closer look at the many delights of Nakasu.

  

  Around 3,500 establishments of varying types are crammed into this long, narrow delta between the Naka and Hakata rivers. More than 30,000 people are said to work at the many bars, cabaret clubs, massage parlors and brothels, and still more come to enjoy themselves. Smooth-talking, gaudily dressed men and women act as self-appointed guides in this tantalizing neon jungle as they compete to entice potential customers into their particular establishment.

  

  Nakasu has traditionally only really come alive at night, but recent developments such as the Gate’s and Riverain shopping and entertainment complexes and The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum are transforming it into an area that can be enjoyed during the daytime too.
