Ibusuki onsen is an open air mixed "hot spring".
It is not an ordinary hot spring with one big bath, but quite an unusual one, in that there is no water at all. Ibusuki onsen is a "sand spring" where people get buried in the hot sand and relax until they have enough. The "hot spring" is mixed, but everyone are wearing a yugata, so the ladies do not need to be afraid to be looked at.
You pay your fee in a little building and get a yugata to wear. After changing into the yugata you go to a spot on the beach with a roof, and in turn you will get buried in the hot sand. When you have had enough, you get back up out of the sand, go back to the building, take a bath, and that is it.
From Kagoshima city take route 226 south to Ibusuki city. When you get to Ibusuki city go to the beach and look for a large roof on some pillars. This is the sand bath. Nearby is a little building where you pay and get the yugata.
Rain, shine or snow visitors flock to Ibusuki beach. Relax under a thatch canopy or at the water's edge while buried to the neck in hot volcanic sand. Done a light cotton yukata in the dressing room and, once you're buried, stay as long as you like. (About 15 minutes is recommended.) A soak in an all natural hot springs will wash any lingering sand when you're done. Many claim the sand heals even the most wound-up muscles, so prepare to have your tension melt away.
