From time immemorial, black-tailed gulls have looked for two things in their nesting colonies: rockiness and inaccessibility.

Ornithologists wanting to study the birds' breeding habits had to brave windswept coastal rocks and islands off the coast of northern Japan.

Now, an innovative colony has appeared just off Tokyo's Yamanote railway line and appears to be thriving in the urban jungle.

Hiroyoshi Higuchi, a professor of ecology at the University of Tokyo, said he confirmed in June that black-tailed gull chicks were being raised on the roof of a building in Ueno in Tokyo's Taito Ward.

He said he would monitor carefully as to how the birds' fertility will affect the urban ecosystem.

"We do not know where the feeding area is, but the number of birds should certainly grow once a breeding ground is established," said Higuchi. "They could prey on such water birds as grebes, spot-billed ducks and little terns as well as sparrow eggs and chicks. "

In the past, black-tailed gulls were seen in Tokyo only in the winter, but they have been spotted in spring and summer over the past five years. They have also been moving into inland areas in the Tohoku region, partly because of an increase in organic rice farming.

The rooftop colony near Ueno's Shinobazu-no-ike pond is home to about 200 black-tailed gulls, of which 20 to 30 pairs have built nests. Higuchi said he found dozens of chicks.

Whale shark debuts at aquarium as another goes free

A female whale shark, Yu-chan, made her debut at the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan on July 23 after she was transported from Kochi Prefecture the day before.

According to officials, the female whale shark, the third-generation Yu-chan shown at the aquarium, was snared in a fishing net off the coast of Cape Muroto in Kochi Prefecture on June 21. She was brought to the research institute the same day .

The shark, 4.1 meters long and about 900 kilograms, is estimated to be five or six years old.

On July 22, she was transferred on a stretcher from a tank to a container loaded on a 30-ton trailer-truck. The truck left the research institute soon after noon.

The male whale shark, the fifth-generation Kai-kun at the aquarium, was trapped in a fishing net off Cape Muroto in June 2007.

After a short stint at the research institute, he was transported to the aquarium in September of that year.

During his four-year stay in the aquarium, the male shark grew from 4.1 meters long to 5.5 meters. His estimated weight increased from 900 kilograms to 1,500 kilograms. When he became too big, the aquarium operator decided to release him into the Pacific after conducting a health check at the research institute.

Another male whale shark, Dai-kun, was released into the ocean July 6 after receiving treatment at the research institute. Though a miniaturized tracking device was installed on the shark, the research institute has yet to receive any data.

The institute is currently home to another female whale shark.

Visitors to John Mung Museum or Ashizuri Kaiyokan marine center, both located in Tosashimizu, can see the shark free at the research institute on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays from 9 am to 3 pm if they showed admission tickets to either of the two facilities.
