I wondered how many taxi drivers and commuters in Singapore are aware that all taxi meters here are slowed by up to 7% due to authority ruling since ancient days?
Most meters are slowed 3%. The “Lucky” ones get more than 5%.
If based on “least slowed” at 3% and driving half a shift, should a driver averaged gloss $200, discounting estimated “flagged down and stoppage time at $80” it is realistic to calculate 3% of $120 = $3.60
If 385 meters = $0.20, 6930 meters = $3.60
If diesel cost 0.09 cents for 100 meters, 6930 meters = $0.60 cents
Means while you collect less $3.60 for a half shift, you also had to donate $0.60 cents of diesel, means a driver gloss “minimum” less $4.20 for a half shift a day.
Multiply $3.60 by 365days = $1,314 less collection a year per driver.
Multiply $0.60 by 365days = $219 (diesel donation) by driver
Multiply $3.60 by 40,000 estimated drivers (2shifts) = $144,000 less a day
Multiply $0.60 by 40,000 = $24,000 (diesel donation) by all drivers each day
Multiply $144,000 by 365days = $52,560,000 was not collected from commuters a year.
Multiply $24,000 by 365 days = $8,760,000 was diesel donation by all drivers each year
Please do your own calculation for the past number of years concerned.
If you want to find out how slow your meter is, you can find out by:-:
1) Ensure your tyres recommended pressure is correct.
2) Preferably find a road with light traffic and not many bends (expressway)?
3) Start and Stop your meter, Set your tachometer (distance traveled) to “ZERO – 0”
4) Start driving at a reasonable & consistent speed and observe your “tar.(tarrif)” display on “small/clock” window which showed “1” when it is near to $8
5) The moment when “tar.” changed to “2” means 10 km distances was covered
6) Immediately see your tachometer, if it is 10.3 means you need to drive extra 300 meters to hit (meter calibration) 1st tier of 10 km,
Means your meter is slowed by 3%.
For a more accurate result, you can also watch display screen during your vehicle inspection (if they allow you to watch)
There they test your vehicle 1000 meters for the 1st tier and 500 meters for the 2nd tier.
Your meter will pass the test as long as it falls within 0% to 7%.
See the extra distances display on screen and do your own calculation.
I gathered this was enforced to safe-guard if any driver decides to deflate his tyres to generated more fare for the same distance traveled. How much can the tyres be deflated before it become a danger to a full load vehicle? It will be interesting to know if 10% tyre deflation will result in 3% more fare? If it is to "err on the side of caution" to enforce this (up to) 7% ruling to safe-guard against this minority group of drivers, where is the fairness to the majority drivers who don't abuse the system?
If there is still no fool-proof sensor, I strongly feel it should be calibrated at actual published fare and benchmark at plus 1% & minus 1% OR plus 2% & minus 2% (instead of slow 7% against all taxi drivers) during vehicle inspection to be fair to both parties????
If you approach your company to acknowledge your slow meter, be prepare for reply that your reputable vehicle manufacture’ tachometer sensor are not as accurate as Taxi company sensor.
Until you pursue further then they “may” tell you about this 7% ruling.
If Taxi Companies still do not see the need to address this unfair matter in the interest of their drivers, the least they should do is to inform commuters about this benefit they are enjoying.
Or alternatively is just add a remark in the fare decal “Actual meter fare is slow up to 7% of published fare” for commuters to appreciate the discount they enjoyed.
There will be some drivers who see no issue with this issue. Likely they will argue that an extra flag-down will offset this shortfall. What is the rational to do overtime everyday to accommodate this unfair policy?
Will you accept been paid 3% less everyday in other jobs and been told to do extra overtime if you want to makeup this shortfall?
walan friend , are you a scholar ?
or math teacher ?
How the f*ck u get those "headache" figures ?

TS how do u measure?
Actually the taximeter is accurate. When I travel 110km/h on my speedo the actual speed register is 101km/h. When I try travelling from Mandai to my house my speedo register 14.7km but my GPS and taxi meter both register the same 13.9km.
They should increase the taxi meter by another 100%. ![]()
