Polling Day is declared on Saturday, 7 May bythe Returning Officer, Yam Ah Mee. It is also a public holiday.
The announcement comes after the Writ of Election for Singapore's next General Election (GE) was issued, with Nomination Day set for Wednesday, 27 April.
This comes six weeks after the release of theElectoral Boundaries report. Close to 2.35 million Singaporeans are eligible to vote in the coming polls.
Independent scholar Dr Derek de Cunha toldYahoo! Singapore that the announced dates would not be a surprise to most people. "The government has tended to want to have elections over the weekend so that falls neatly into what we've come to be accustomed to in terms of how the PAP has conducted elections."
He added, "It seems that the PAP wants to give the impression that it is in total control of events. It is not panicking about anything, it is not hasty.
"If it was to suggest that it wanted a very quick election then it would have had it on 3 May. But to hold it on a weekend is perfectly fine and I think it would be an interesting election to look forward to."
On Tuesday afternoon, President SR Nathan dissolved Parliament on the advice of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. The Proclamation was issued through the government gazette.
The minimum period between Nomination Day and Polling Day has been extended from nine to 10 days to compensate for the extra Cooling-Off Day, which was introduced last April to allow voters time to reflect on issues during the election before going to the polls.
There will be 87 seats in Parliament to be contested, carved out from 12 single-member constituencies, two four-member GRCs, 11 five-member GRCs and two six-member GRCs.
On Nomination Day, each candidate standing for election is required to pay a S$16,000 deposit and nomination papers can be submitted from 11 a.m. and noon at the nine nomination centres.
