satellite-based method for ERP ?

SINGAPORE: The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded tenders for trials to develop the next generation of the electronic road pricing (ERP) system.
What's being explored is a satellite-based method for road tolls, which reduces dependence on physical ERP gantries.
Four groups of companies have secured the tenders.
They are Kapsch TrafficCom AB, MHI Engine System Asia and NCS, ST Electronics (Info-Comm Systems) and IBM Singapore,
and Watchdata Technologies as well as Beijing Watchdata System.
Each group will be given seed funding of S$1 million to develop and demonstrate technological solutions.
The 18-month trials starts next month.
LTA said it will assess the performance of the various solutions at the end of the trial, to determine whether an appropriate technological solution is available and can form the basis of a next generation ERP system.
It added the development of the project is in its very early stages and that the next generation ERP system, if technically feasible, is still some years away before it is ready to be launched and implemented. -

I guess there will be a new fare structure.
Example, every 1km during peak hours, $0.10, off peak hour, $0.05.
And then if you reach CBD area, automatically qualify for $2.00 deduction. -
think sg too many cars liao... roads jam jam jam should just reduce number of coe... to minus 0.5% growth per year... build more MRT lines... COE up no choice... no need fanciful ERP...

Current ERP gantry has gained sufficient return on their investments.. Now is time to look at expanding.

i think satelite erp system might have more benefits that people might not see so obvious at first if i am driver whether private or not, maybe next time no need buy parking coupons, or face the trouble of tearing or the worry of tearing wrong or not enough if i dont make it back in time. the opc users will also follow law and they themselves dont need to apply manually if they really need to drive out anytime. if i am just normal road user or resident of property, i can also feel better that fewer vehicles can anyhow park to block the road or bus lane, or use up carpark space, because they might have to face penalty. if i am cab driver, then when more people find it not so worth to own cars, they might take more rides. if i am the authority, i can control traffic flow as and when necessary, without shifting the fixed giant goalposts. i can also check the speed, position and movement of any vehicle anywhere anytime, in case of accident or theft, this might help manage insurance claims and then premiums in the long run.

Agreed with yr 3rd and 4th point.
higher ridership means better income for me.
track individual vehicle status for insurance and accidents stuff, good to have. hope it make SG rds a safer place to drive.
But then hor... night drivers like us zoom 110km/h (after midnight) to woodlands or jurong west and back to town leh. so how?

Sorry, I dun buy season parking or put coupons when parking.
I park at the park and walk home one... heeee.

imagine a day when theres no more illegal opc use, no more illegal parking, no more illegal bus lane/road shoulder use, no more unexplained accident and fraudulent insurance claim, no more traveling over 90kph... o-0!

imagine no more illegal u-turns, no more dash red light or block zebra crossing dont give way to pedestrians at ALL junctions..no more over-queuing at popular taxi stands causing jams to main road like lucky plaza, paragon and centrepoint and others, they say max 7 in queue means max 7 in queue, number 8 onwards joining the queue will be auto-fined $XXX.. no more parking one side waiting for customers just to save fuel and pick calls, or excuse go toilet, or to nap or makan, everyone will have to be hard at work running their engine moving around.. what a perfect world it will be for drivers, customers and other road users! :)

best of all, they dont have to activate the entire system and risk overload it all the time for every area every second of the day...with a simple switch, manual or program, they can selectively cover a certain specific district for any period of time at any time of the day or night and then immediately jump over to another district in the next moment, so drivers and road users might never know where and when they would be observed. if nobody knows for sure, then EVERYONE will follow rules all the time because everyday everywhere will be the same rollercoaster risk. you may be clear yesterday but you might strike $XXX ...TWICE today. with just 2 persons manning the system per shift just in case and an auto machine for printing notices, they can control the entire island of cars whaaa :D
