Yes, smart phone is for technology savvy TD, they can use it to make call, check important info eg. Road Traffic Conditions, Airpot Flight information etc. And even for GPS Road Guiding. Normal phone is for those TD who are driving with manual Taxi, WHY??? Not enough hand and fingers to surf all the functions of a smart phone, so a normal phone for a normal income. -

Driving of course cannot use smart phone to check, but do you know everyday a lot of motorist is still driving while talking on the phone with their hands on their mobile phone. I only use it while I stop at traffic light. As long as I manage properly, I make sure I am safe from any accident to occur. -
Smart phone like it or not is the trend of today and tomorrow, and samsung had taken over Nokia as the world best seller, it will become a norm in our life, however, I hv to agree that it can be a hazard while on the road, today many vehicles at traffic light need to honk at them to move when it turns green, cos most are looking at their smart phones or pads./tabs.
The usage therefore hv to take account into many areas, previously you can see look at a short message or miss call, today, peoples stare at smart phone for a long period, cos the information are more and interesting.
As for TD, it is definitely good for on call, type the road and search, then hit the direction, you just move on, no need flip directories or much thinking, but you hv to do it at a stationary condition with double signal on, and the time needed the most is 2 minutes. Street pick up can also come out with just a condo or landmark names which even the most experience driver also do not know exactly where, what you can do is stop, do not on the meter, tell them nicely that you need to check your GPS, most do not mind, unless some really in a hurry, then ask them to take another taxi, better to let go then to lost in a concrete jungle and get F until no mood to drive. Once you located the place, on the meter and move on. Some paxs are damn irritating, that goes to all customers in all trade, but as long as you remain cool and steady, they may end up respecting you. I alway tell pax when they insist that i should know the road as the taxi driver, then a teacher should know all the subject, and a chef should know how to cook everything, moreover the landscape of singapore changes so fast.
At the journey, you reach the house, you can tell the pax, the we both learned, I learned the place, the condo names, the pax learned the road of his/her house.
