Does anyone know why this industrial zone is called "Tuas"?
As I was smoking by the road side yesterday morning after my passenger alighted at Tuas, I thought to myself why this industrial zone is called "Tuas"
This is what I had in my mind. During the 70s, the Government developed the parcel of land into an Industrial area, but it wasn't big enough so they decided to make it bigger by reclaiming.
So, this is how the name came into it. BIG=TUA"S"![]()
(Copied & pasted from wikipedia)...
The Tuas area in the early nineteenth century was referred to by three place names: Tg Kampong, Tg Rawa and Tg Gull — references made in Franklin and Jackson's 1830 map of Singapore.
Tuas used to be swamp land which was later cleared for squatter settlement. It became a fishing village. In the old days, it was not unusual to see about 200 fishing boats in Tuas every morning.
In the 1970s, the residents in Tuas were resettled in public housing estates. Tuas was then developed for industrial use. In the 1980s, land was reclaimed around Tuas for more industrial development. By 1988, about 6.5 km² of land off Tuas were reclaimed. Land reclamation off Tuas is still ongoing; the land area of Tuas will increase from 17.02 km² in 1996 to the projected 20.75 km² by 2010 [1]. PentaOceanConstruction (五洋建è¨ï¼‰is most heavily involved in the land reclamation. The peninsular reclaimed in the late 1980s to early 1990s is named Tuas South, while the land currently being reclaimed to the southeast of Tuas Jetty is known as the Tuas South Extension.

In 18 nought nought, some British officers were looking for the settlement Singapura. They search the entire Riau archepelago, and were getting anxious as Sir Stamford was waiting for them. The orang laut couldn't understand what the British were saying or where they want to go, so the officers left them at Batam. Reliefed themselves at Bukit Senyum. Then they spotted what seemed to be a river mouth across from Batam. It was the western end of the Straight of Johor. They headed straight for it and landed on the right bankf which is actually Temasek.
The fishermen there told them that Singapura was a little further to the to the east.
The elated British officers broke open a bottle and toasted "Here to us"
And so the here became Tuas as the natives heard it.
History
"Tuas" is a Malay word that refers to a fishing method used by Malay fishermen in pre-modern Singapore. In this method, fishermen used coconut fronds and leaves to lure fish into the nets that were submerged underwater.
