  SINGAPORE'S biggest cab company, ComfortDelGro, is putting security cameras inside its taxis in a bid to keep its drivers safe from crime.

  The pinhole camera, embedded in the taxi's terminal, faces the rear seat and will record movements within the cab.

  Responding to queries from The Straits Times, ComfortDelGro spokesman Tammy Tan confirmed that the taxi operator has fitted the new camera-equipped terminals in some 4,000 of its 16,000-strong fleet so far.

  "These cameras are currently not in operation as we are still in the process of developing the software needed to centrally control them," she said. "The plan is for the cameras to record only when the distress button is pressed and not otherwise."

  Details will be given later.

  ComfortDelGro's latest move comes more than four years after it said it may consider installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in its taxis to curb attacks against cabbies.

  Declining to give figures, Ms Tan would say only that the company has seen an increase in assault cases against its drivers in the last few years.

  Still, police statistics show that robberies in cabs went down from 48 in 2009 to 28 in 2011.

  SMRT Taxis, which has about 3,200 taxis, said its cabs do not have cameras that face passengers "as we are mindful of their privacy".

  Its deputy director of integrated systems Eunice Lui said that it will consider installing these cameras if assault cases go up.

  When some cities in Australia, Canada and the United States fitted cameras in cabs, related crimes plunged by up to 60 per cent.

  The Oxford City Council in Britain will require all of its 600-plus cabs to be fitted with at least one CCTV camera by 2015, to record all passengers' conversations.

  Currently, Singapore's cabbies press the panic button during a robbery, or in an emergency, so that cab operators' contact centres can alert the police and use Global Positioning System technology to locate the vehicle.

  When contacted, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said it is in discussions with ComfortDelGro on installing the new terminals with inward-facing Web cameras in the vehicles.

  An LTA spokesman said: "We have imposed certain conditions on the taxi company, such as ensuring that the video images will be saved securely and are accessible only by authorised personnel."

  An LTA spokesman said ComfortDelGro will be required to demonstrate to the LTA how the camera works, and ensure "there is no intrusion of privacy", before the cameras go operational.

  Cabbies who spoke to The Straits Times said having a "third eye" in taxis will no doubt make them feel safer. But some have questioned if recording only after the panic button is activated might be too late, and are calling instead for recording to start when the meter is activated.

  Mr Colin Wong, who has been driving for more than 10 years, said: "How do I have the sense or time to press the button when I have a knife to my neck?"

  Government Parliamentary Committee for Transport chairman Cedric Foo said having the cameras in cabs will protect drivers and passengers. But he acknowledged that the trade-off would be the intrusion of passengers' privacy.

  Bank analyst Grace Lai, 33, who takes a taxi at least three times a week, said: "There should be strict guidelines to limit who can view the footage and under what circumstances, to prevent any abuse."

  4,000 and going to 8,000, you think who can employ so many peoples to monitor cabby ar??

  Actually Monitor Lan is also correct, IT will also install this so called Moniter Local Area Network (Lan) software in near future, this is allow any nearby cabbies of a distressed cabby to be able to view the distressed cabby taxis inside too.

  the gps guidance sucks big time!! can lead to rds when only accessible thru one way opposite traffic one... kena twice already at two locations one joo chiat lane and one at boon lay... can foget abt using it...

  never rely too much on GPS , i never rely too much , i rely on my photorgaphic memories of Singapore roads  .

  if rely on memories , if reach destinations on time , it's a challenge , it's an achievement , cos i succeeded doing ti without external aid .

  If rely on memories , if late for ETA , it's a learning stage .

  Next time dun do it again .
