FM Yeo gives indication on GE date
By Channel NewsAsia's IndoChina Bureau Chief Anasuya Sanyal | Posted: 26 January 2011 1452 hrsCHIANGRAI, Thailand: Foreign Minister George Yeo has given an indication of when he thinks the General Election will be called.
He was speaking to Singapore media in Chiangrai, before an ASEAN foreign ministers road trip from Thailand to China.
"Presidential elections will be in the third quarter. SM Goh said a key decision to make for the Prime Minister is whether to have general elections before or after the presidential election.
"I told my grassroots that we should be prepared from the end of March onwards after the budget debate. I think the most likely window will be the second quarter of this year.
"If it's not the second quarter, then it will be after the presidential election, because you can't have the two together. It will confuse the issues in people's minds, but this is - I'm not speaking from inside knowledge.
"This is something the Prime Minister has to decide and it's something he will decide at the appropriate time."
Presidential elections are due by August this year, and the General Election is due by February 2012.
