SINGAPORE : Police have arrested a 29-year-old man who is believed
to have broken into a jewellery shop at People's Park Complex last
Tuesday and made away with about S$300,000 worth of jewellery.
The suspect was identified from CCTV recordings.
The shop owner said the CCTV footage showed the suspect was unsuccessful
in trying to break into other shops.
And even though he spent only about two minutes in the jewellery shop,
he still managed to make away with about 600 gold necklaces.
After identifying the 29-year-old suspect, the police tried to ambush
him at various locations before successfully nabbing him at Bukit Gombak
MRT station on Sunday.
The man led the officers to a flat in Bukit Batok where 404 pieces of
jewellery were recovered.
The officers also discovered several mobile phones and computer
notebooks which are believed to be stolen.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Tan Hung Hooi, Commander of Central Police
Division, said: "We had very little leads to work on for this case, but
we did not give up.
"In fact, we persisted and continued with our investigations and
islandwide ambushes. This is definitely a good arrest case as we
successfully prevented the criminal from continuing with his crime
spree."
The suspect will be charged in court on Tuesday. If convicted, he faces a
maximum jail term of ten years.
