I make a summary here on "Siu Tai" and "Ka Tai" :
Hypothesis for a Cantonese origin & it's arguments :-
- " Siu (upper rising tone) Tai (low level tone) " and " Ka (upper level tone) Tai (low level tone) " would roughly fit the semantical opposite for " Siu (å°‘) > lesser " and " Ka (åŠ ) > more " for Cantonese
- Actually the semantical opposite for "å°‘" in Cantonese is "多", whereas the actual semantical opposite for "åŠ " is "減". But we could not find "Siu Tai" oppose to "To Tai" as well as we could not find "Ka Tai" oppose to "Kam Tai". This is the dilemma
- " Siu (upper rising tone) " can be both å°‘ as well as å°� in Cantonese
- If we postulate " Tai (low level tone) " to be 大, it might possibly be "少大" and "åŠ å¤§"
- " Siu Tai " could possibly be "å°�大" too, but it's opposite should not be "åŠ å¤§", because the semantical opposite for "å°�" is "大". Therefore if " Siu Tai " is "å°�大", it's opposite should be "大大" ( Tai Tai )
- In actual Cantonese conversation, actually the normal semantical usage for "small" is also usually not "� (Siu)" but is "細 (Sai)" << eg. "Big one - 大� (Taai Tsek)" vs "Small one - 細� (Sai Tsek)" and not "�� (Siu Tsek)" which sounds weird
- " Tai (low level tone) " cannot in any way be "低" nor "底" in Cantonese. It can only qualify as "大" only when it is a long vowel "a" --> "Taai (low level tone). If it is a short vowel "a" --> "Tai (low level tone)" then it become "弟"
Hypothesis for a Hockchew origin & it's arguments :-
- Hockchew and Hainanese are the coffeeshop pioneers in Singapore rather than the Hokkiens or Cantonese
- " Siu (upper rising tone) Tai (low level tone) " and " Ka (upper level tone) Tai (low level tone) " cannot form any intelligible meaning in Hockchew
- " Siu Tai " and " Ka Tai " cannot appear in normal spoken form because there is a rule in Hockchew that initial "T" has to be elided into "L" when preceded by an open vowel syllable, therefore there could only be " Siu Lai " and " Ka Lai " forms. " Siu - Tai " and " Ka - Tai " can only happen when one is speaking to little children or reading from the text word-by-word
- " Siu " in Hockchew is å°� but not å°‘ (< when used in "lesser" meaning). "å°‘" in Hockchew is " Tsiu " , therefore it is only possible to postulate a Hockchew "å°�"
- If we postulate a Hockchew "å°�", then the semantical opposite cannot be "åŠ (Ka)" because the semantical opposite for "å°�" in Hockchew is "大 (Tuai)"
- Also in actual Hockchew conversation, the normal semantical usage for "small" is also not "� (Siu)" but is "細 (Sae)" << eg. "Big one - 大� (Tuai-Tsiek)" vs "Small one - 細� (Sae-Tsiek)" and not "�� (Siu Tsiek)" which sounds weird too
- " Tai (low level tone) " cannot in any way be "奶" nor "糖" nor "白" nor "大" nor "甜" in Hockchew
