No it's the 1st Cultural Revolution that abolish the classic Confucius that segregate the officials and scholars from the commoners. 白� (present Mandarin) was introduced to make commoners literate. Unfortunately, in creating a simplified language much essence of Chinese literature and tradition is lost. Couple with the later communism, the present language is a complete altered language as to what is classical Chinese. I learnt the classic Chinese which is the base root for many of the dialects although for a short stint of 2 years.

Wow, that sound so interesting learning classical Chinese. Was that more interesting and tougher to learn?
Believe languages are like that, through times the originality is partially lost .

Not that difficult as my teacher teached me the classics in Hokkien; better than learning Jap at school for sure.

That's good. unfortunately, it will not take place any more. I don't mind learn that.
About hokkien , now to practise hokkien, I have to speak to those very elderly who speak good hokkien. My cantonese is better than hokkien.

I am not as good as my parents but that happens, my grandkids are almost lost..
