not the case, californian wines since 1974 have beaten their french counterparts in blind tasting competitions. who said you have to have fancy and expensive french bordeaux when california produces equally good if not better wines at more affordable prices?Originally posted by Mumbo Jumbo:Hmm start on $20 Aussie wines first, get used to the basic wines based on singular grape varietals like Carbanet Sauvs, Merlots, Shiraz, Chardonnay.
Aus wines have purity of flavour, meaning it tastes like it should taste. But it gets boring cus they all taste the same, and taste so "fresh". But you learn to tell the subtle flavors apart.
French and Italian wines have more character. Traditionally, european wines are sold according to Appellation(place of origin, aka Bordeaux, Burgundy), then Chateaus(name of the House producing the wine), but not grape varietals(they don't advertise what grapes they use). They usually blend their grapes, which can be anything from 2 to 5 varities. Also, quality is largely determinant on nature, while Aus wines depend more on technology to create consistent wines. Thus, old world wines may not taste as "good" or "standardized" as new world wines, but they've got their characteristics due to minimal processing.
You can appreciate French wines better if you've drunk enuf Aus wines.
vodka ribena?Originally posted by skeujin:ribena counted as non alcholic wine boh? got sparkling version some more....![]()
Exactly. The reason new world wines beat old world wines is because they are manufactured to have all the winning characteristics that wines should have. I know im generalising, but theres strength to both new and old world wines. I like both, but old world wines are better for appreciation, while new world wines are excellent for quality drinking.Originally posted by vito_corleone:not the case, californian wines since 1974 have beaten their french counterparts in blind tasting competitions. who said you have to have fancy and expensive french bordeaux when california produces equally good if not better wines at more affordable prices?![]()

Tasting wine is somewhat of a skill too. The more you drink the more you will come to like it, as you develope your palate.Originally posted by gasband:Just drink lah. U like the taste u will enjoy. U dun like the taste, come from France, California or outer space u also wun enjoy.
one reason why i prefer new world wines because most use screw-caps instead of corks. corks somehow tarnish the taste of a wine because it reacts with the wine giving it a woody flavour as time passes, and its a bitch to openOriginally posted by Mumbo Jumbo:Tasting wine is somewhat of a skill too. new zealand and australian wines have started using screw-caps on a larger scale, certain american makers too. ahh have yet to try chilean would love to sometime. i'm more of a white than a red fanOriginally posted by Mumbo Jumbo:Really? The only time I came across screw caps is in a Lindeman's. Lindemans Carbanet-Shiraz is nice!
Also, you should try Chilean wines. Their pretty darn good.
