Review of Makansutra Food Centre Beside Esplanade

  Had the following on Friday 4 May 2007:
  
  - Chicken Wings ($1.20 per piece, min 3 pieces per order)
  - Carrot Cake ($4 portion, alternative is $6)
  - Happy Pot Earthern Pot Steamboat ($8.90)
  
  The chicken wings were... normal... nothing special, better off paying for $1 chicken wings
  
  Carrot Cake was nice, but at the price of $4, was really overpriced
  
  Happy Pot, we had Tom Yam Soup, comes with some veg, tung hoon, chicken meat, 2 fishballs, and 2 prawns. Interesting taste, and earthern pot was something new. Unfortunately, portion was small, and again, the price was on the costly side
  
  Din try other things, saw Prata Set at $4. Nasi Goreng set at $6. Malay Chicken Rice at $4.
  
  Overall verdict:
  Food Rating: 7/10 (Carrot Cake is good, Happy Pot was not bad, Chicken wings, soso)
  Value-for-money: 5/10 (I feel portions were small, and prices too costly. Its overhyped by Makansutra)
  
  Won't be going back there again with that sort of price. We can find better food at cheaper prices elsewhere.

  Their prices turns me off already..

  go there muz eat the fried prawn noodles and char kway teow..
  
  satay got one malay stall nice, but not cheap.
  
  the rest? can forget about trying.

  I got half a mind to write to Seetoh and tell him to stop labelling that place as the best hawker food in Singapore.
  
  Its totally unreasonable to even consider the food there Good, much less the best in Singapore.

  eh? I ate there once. I don't remember anything about the price and quality of the food.... that is to say, neither the price nor the quality made any impression... is it supposed to be the best in Singapore?

  I see young kids, whole groups, sitting there eating BBQ food.
  
  After one time there, I am really peeved.

  I always find that Makansutra's recommendations are just not reliable at all. Too much commercialism. What we need is an "underground" food forum, maybe like this one, where less well known and under-rated foods are publicised.

  Thye Wah Fried Hokkien Mee... Yum yum... Char kway teoh and fried oyster also not bad...
  
  The BBQ stingray at $10 also not bad... The sambal shiok enough but too little...

  You must try the fried oyster at Lor 5 Toa Payoh Food Centre. Cheaper and nicer still.

  Sure if it is a thick fluffy omelette like above stuffed with large tender oysters like the one we had at Newton
