POH CHEU - SOON KUEH
ADDRESS : Block 127 #01-230 Bukit Merah Lane 1
OPENING HOURS : 8am - 6pm, closed on Sundays and public holidays
PRICE : 50 cents (turnip, yam or chives filling), 60 cents (bamboo-shoot filling)
The simply divine filling is practically bursting out of the fat soon
kueh but what stands out is the ku chye (chives) kueh with paperthin
springy skin. As you sink your teeth into it, take the time to enjoy
the crunchy vegetables which look green and fresh. If you like yam, go
for the yam kueh. This stall at the corner of a big coffeeshop in the
Alexandra Village vicinity is also well known for its variety of ang ku
kueh. Everything is fresh and handmade. The family of 10, including
cousins, chip in to help out in this labour-intensive operation. At the
helm is the matronly looking boss who started the business 20 years ago
with her own recipe. When asked how she should be addressed, she says
in all seriousness: “Just call me Auntie Soon Kueh.'' For the record,
she doesn't look like one.
