ok. so. i stay in the uni residence with 3 other people. we have to share one fridge, and a puny kitchen. i have no real knifes nor kitchen stuff.
I'm used to preparing foods with choppers, graters, etc which i do not have now. and i'm used to frying things in a large wok/frying pan which i also do not have anymore as there's no space in the kitchen to keep them.
what i do have is a pot (which can be used to boil and stir-fry) and an oven. and i can steam small items too. like...REALLY SMALL items.
so. i have some simple recipes. and i've come up with some others so that i can actually cook using the kitchen i have since i've PAID FOR IT. omelettes are great. as are sandwiches. but i need real food! MEATS!!! to be honest, i do not really know how to prepare meats without decent sauces (spices and herbs!!!!!) >< i can only think of a pork chop recipe that i can make using what i have now...and i don't have a BBQ...i've never used those store bought ready made stuff...so...i don't know how they work...=\
what i need are some REALLY VERSATILE recipes. you know...recipes where you can cut up and add whatever you want, or item A can be replaced with B/C/D/E/etc... oh. and i don't want to spend so much money on spices and herbs too as i won't be using them so often...
and another issue is that i'm living in no-asian-food-land! i've brought my own soy sauce and sesame oil. and i have a few packets of chinese noodles. but that really is about it...T.T
throw me ideas!! it might help me come up with something. or i'll make what u tell me to. if i can...haha
ok. now. who wants to help me summarize this into say...25 words or less...? ![]()
hohoho~
soup..i cooked a lot of soup during my uni days when i was still staying in hostel...
for example, you can just buy potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, pork ribs, throw everything into a pot, put in some salt, then boil for around 1 hour. Then it is ready to serve.
Here's a few simple ones:
(1) Boiled chicken maryland.
Put 1 x chicken maryland in the boiling water and cook for 30min in low heat. Take chicken out and put it on a plate. Pour some sesame oil and light soy sauce over the chicken. Serve it with rice. You can use the chicken stock to cook some vegies in it. If you like, you can also season the stock so you can have chicken soup with your meal.
(2) Boiled Pork loin
Cook the same way as the chicken. Except instead of sesame oil, I think soy sauce is good enough. If you like your hot chilli, you can put cut fresh chilli in the soy sauce. It's yummy.
(3) Steak/lamb chop
You can just marinade the meat with salt and cracked pepper for 15-20 min. Then pan fry it. Nice and simple. Cook your vegies in the microwave.
Braised chicken with mushrooms.
1) Wash the mushroom and soak it till soft.
2) Season chicken with seseme oil and oyster sauce (if you can find), if not season with soy sauce and sesame oil.
3) Add sufficient water to braise the chicken and mushrooms.
4) Braise it for at least 20 to 30 mins.
5) Add your own veg to it if you wish.
This is a simply yet tasty dish.

Good suggestion. You cooked ABC soup???? I cook ABC soup with chicken instead of pork rib. Pork rib more expensive. I recommend Holland potatoes for it taste better.

Yea, pork rib more expensive but it will make the soup taste sweeter. Of course, during my uni days when I was more starved of cash, I used chicken wings instead of pork ribs.
I used the cheapest potatoes I could find in Fairprice...which is the Russet Potatoes, yea, not really that suitable for this soup.
You can also cook stir fried vegetables. Brocolli stir-fried for example. One of my fave dishes, just prepared it last weekend=D
Chop brocolli into small pieces, chop garlic into tiny pieces, then slice carrots. Fry garlic with oil. Put into carrot. Put in brocolli. Put in corn or mushroom if you want. Put in one or two spoonfuls of water , let them simmer for a while. Then add a dash of soya sauce, or you can add in some salt. Cover and let it simmer again. Don't cook it for too long cos the brocolli will get soggy, then won't be nice le.

My mum used to cooked with pork ribs, but I prefer chicken for it is cheaper and healthier. Next time cook the ABC soup with holland potatoes as it taste great. My mum will never want to substitute other potatoes with the ones from holland. I once boil the soup with non holland potatoes, did not taste nice. ACtually, using chicken wings for soup can be oily. You may want to consider, the chicken thigh or chicken breast.

Yea, no choice that time was poor, chicken wings were the cheapest meat I could get :(

I think chicken wings from supermarket are more expensive than chicken thigh. I miss the ABC soup. Did you add onion?

Nope, I can't stand onions haha. But can add I guess, personal preference.
bake chicken?? i think oven can bake a lot of things lei...

Tastier with onions. No worry, once onion is boiled that raw onion smell is gone.
Cabbages? they can be used to sweeten the soup.
I recommand cabbage, carrots, potato and some minced meat. Boiled them for about an hour with a little salt and it'll turn out wonderful.
For a better soup, use a slow cooker and add in some ikan bilis

It is not the smell, it is the look of soggy onions that gets to me.

I dunno you, but i think onions are tastier when fried :)

Ahh...reminds me of another soup which I like.
Cabbage with eggs and anchovies. Dump in anchovies first, followed by cabbage. Can add in a bit of minced meat or chai por if you prefer. Then boil for a while, don't boil too long otherwise cabbage will get soggy. Then add in the egg. ready to be served ![]()

Oh no. REmove it once it is cooked. Or just do without them. Onions adds flavour to dishes. I don't mind to use it to add on to the taste but will not want to eat it, onion generates gas for weak stomach.

True. Onions, garlic are good for health.

I just can't stand looking at it. And fried onions have a weird taste. I will usually take it out if they are inside the things I am eating lol.

Dunno leh! I think must fry till golden brown like that then will look appertising.
yeah i remember one more simple dish.
Just marinate some minced meat with light soya sauce and pepper, boil them with porridge and add some salt. That porridge is easy to cook + nice to eat
Okie, now I am reminded of another dish haha.
get some minced meat, make them into minced meatballs using some diluted starch. Best if you put in some chai por ^^
Then cook porridge, again throw in the meatballs, together with dried cuttlefish, dried shrimps, and best if you have dried oysters. But not sure if you have access to any Asian foodstore there so might be difficult to get the oysters. Then add in some cubed tofu. Let them cook for a while. Then ready to serve =D
Actually I got more dishes to share la...but dunno you can get the ingredients or not. Like radish soup, lotus root soup, century egg porridge...
Damn I am hungry. T_T
