"Our advice to consumers is that they avoid eating pistachio products, and that they hold onto those products," said Dr. David Acheson, assistant commissioner for food safety. "The number of products that are going to be recalled over the coming days will grow, simply because these pistachio nuts have then been repackaged into consumer-level containers."
Two people called the FDA complaining of gastrointestinal illness that could be associated with the nuts, but the link hasn't been confirmed, Acheson said. Still, the plant decided to shut down late last week, officials said.
AVA intensifies tests on pistachios as precaution after US recall
SINGAPORE : The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) has said
it is intensifying its checks and testing of pistachios available in
Singapore.
It stressed this is a precautionary measure after news that the
United States' second-largest pistachio processor, Setton Farms in
California, was conducting a voluntary recall of over 450 tonnes of the
nuts due to possible Salmonella contamination.
The US recall came after Kraft Foods in America detected salmonella
contamination in pistachios found in its Back to Nature trail mix.
The pistachios were traced back to Setton Farms.
The California Department of Public Health also said another
manufacturer, Kroger Company had also voluntarily recalled its Private
Selection Shelled Pistachios, although it was unclear if its products
were linked to Setton Farms.
Singapore's AVA said that although 39 per cent of all pistachios
imported into the country comes from the US, none of the affected
products are sold here.

weak immune systems, such as children and the elderly. - CNA/ms
