Fresh bread made using a plastic processing technology and the world's first wine made from yeast taken from sea water are among some of the 300 college lab-developed products that are drawing shoppers in Tokyo.
The foods, innovatively created with the help of corporations, are offered in a special fair at a department store operated by chain operator Takashimaya Co. in the Shinjuku district, in which 28 colleges are taking part.
The project was led by major food magazine ''Bimi Serai'' (Tasty Serai). Its director Koichi Matsumoto, 46, said he hopes the event will encourage more people to be aware of the colleges' ability to develop new foods.
Yamagata University offered a type of soft rice-flour bread using a technique to make foam plastic, while the University of Yamanashi put on sale the world's first wine made from yeast extracted from sea water.
Kinki University also prepared tuna rice bowls using bluefin tuna that the college had succeeded in farm-raising for the first time in the world.
