Avoid it at all costs. That's the message nutritionists are giving with regard to KFC's new Double Down Sandwich that goes on sale today.
Two chicken fillets are used in place of bread or a roll. Between the pieces of chicken you will find two pieces of bacon, melted slices of Monterey Jack and pepper Jack cheese and sauce. At about $5 and 540 calories, it's comparable calorie-wise to eating a Big Mac. But wait! KFC's new Double Down sandwich offers even more.
The Double Down has 1,380 milligrams of sodium; 1,430 milligrams if you ask for it grilled. That's close to the American Heart Association's recommendation that adults eat less than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day.
When Walter Willett, chairman of the nutrition department at the Harvard School of Public Health, was asked his opinion of the new KFC Double Down Sandwich, he replied very simply.
"This is not a healthy choice," he said.
It seems obvious to me. Whether you're exploring low-carb options or simply hoping to remove some gluten from your diet by eliminating the bread in your sandwich, I do believe I'd look elsewhere for options. The KFC Double Down Sandwich isn't a healthy recommendation.
