Okok....so we are not going to be jamie oliver or anthony bourdain..is it worth spending tens of thousands learning how to cook and get a degree?
to some yes, to some no.
Cooking is a very hands-on thing, so seems like a degree might not be the way to go, lots of people can cook, maybe if you want to look for some job that needs those credential then it's fine, but it's a niche market. If you are local, be prepare to be over whelmed by the amount of foreigners taking super duper low pay for any thing with a wok. ![]()
It seems that food science, nutrition are added to give cooks a more well rounded education...
Also sometimes it's a bitch working for small companies cheapo bosses.
Think it's something that really require long time passion and dedication or else it will be tough going.
everyone thinks they are going to be celebrity millionaire chef till they realised they end up paying off debt to culinary colleges earning 2-3k a month sweating out in a kitchen:)
You will need that something special to have that extra edge over most of the cooks out there to survive, really not easy, also have to convince resturant owners that you are worth paying that kind of money even. I have an ex-collegue whose brother worked for a resturant, the resturant closed down, his pay from $5k became, $900 as he had to complete with a lot of other people for a job.
是 chef!
Without using google, define what an amuse bouche is. What is the purpose of a sous vide machine?

Yeah, I mean chef not cook. He used to cook abalones and other expensive stuff for his own lunch as he was in charge of the whole kitchen then, but after the resturant closed, he is a cook earning S$900, a change of fortune. I guess.

IMO, no. unless you really got talent.
It's true lah..unless your old man owns a restaurant...or else slog for life:)
Not really. But it depends. Kitchen work is really, really tough. Like someone said, be prepared to get own by FTs.
But then to spend a few thousands like $XXXXX unless your family is really rich or your really really talented. If not forget it la.
