Be prepared to pay more for additional helpings of sauces for your McDonald’s McNuggets.
The
fast food chain announced that as part of a month-long trial, it will
charge 30 cents for every packet of nugget sauce customers ask for, on
top of what they are already given.
Kevin Lim, McDonald’s
Singapore communications manager, told Yahoo! Singapore that the trial,
which started on Monday (25 June) in 30 McDonald’s restaurants including Bishan Junction 8, Bedok North and Bugis Junction, is aimed at preventing food wastage.
“We
aim to find a fair solution for reducing wastage and believe the free
allotment of sauce should meet the needs of the majority of our
customers,” he added.
The chain has more than 115 restaurants island-wide.
In
the trial, customers who buy a six-piece nuggets can get up to two
packets of sauce free. For orders of nine-piece and 20-piece nuggets,
the customers will get up to three or four packets. Thereafter, a charge
of 30 cents will apply for every additional serving of the sauce.
Those
who purchase other food items such as a meal, sandwich or fries will be
given one unit of nugget sauce free on request, McDonald’s said. It
added that the 30 cent charge will not apply to the other sauces the
restaurants provide.
Customers with feedback on the trial are also welcomed to write to [email protected].
McDonald’s latest move has met with mixed reactions.
Republic
Polytechnic student Justin Lam, said he is okay with paying extra for
the sauces because "they are essential to eating nuggets".
Still,
the 20-year-old, who eats at McDonald’s twice a week, suggested, "I
don't think charging for sauces is a good way of managing wastage
because it can deter people from going to McDonald’s. Using a sauce
dispenser would be better.”
Another customer, 24-year-old student
Zianna Zainal said, “It’s a good move to prevent wastage, I wouldn’t
mind paying 30 cents for extra sauce. I’ve been travelling and it’s
normal for McDonald’s outlets overseas to charge for sauces.”
“It makes McDonald’s more expensive but if it helps prevent wastage, it’s a good move,” she added.
But there are also some who are critical of the move to charge for extra sauces.
Housewife
Nelly Ng, 31, who buys nuggets once a week for her husband and two
daughters from the McDonald’s outlet in Bishan, described the 30 cents
charge as “unjustified”.
“If I am already paying for the nuggets,
then I should be given any amount of sauce I want. And what they are
saying about wastage don’t apply to my family because we finish all the
sauce everytime,” she said.
You mean there are people who eat more than 4 packs of the sauce every visit? ![]()

KNS. I every meal confirm at least 2 curry sauce de. 1 for fries and 1 for burger.
like that everytime i eat mac need pay like 50cents more just for the sauce -.-"
I always ask for bbq sauce when I order my meals with fries. They always hand me 2 packs, but I hand them 1 back, coz I only need one.
They should educate their farking staff about food wastage first before they try to educate their clients.
They can always integrate the dispenser solution for their nugget sauces like they do for chilli and ketchup, if their problem is food wastage.
But we know its not, they don't dare raise their prices for their value meals, so the next best thing they do is put a price tag on their most sought after commodity, coz its the next best way to make a quick buck.
Mcdonalds can go fark themselves. Coz the next thing they do is start charging per spurt of their chilli sauce dispenser.
“If I am already paying for the nuggets, then I should be given any amount of sauce I want. And what they are saying about wastage don’t apply to my family because we finish all the sauce everytime,” she said.
Typical mind set of the Singaporean customer.
Just because of a few inconsiderates, all have to pay. Not only McDonalds, but also t hawker stalls, espcially with cut red chillis. They will take as much as possible, and all will claim they finish all.
nah i only go for chilli and curry sauce
usually they give mi 2 curry sauce...
Hi everyone, many of you have written us with questions on the current Nugget Sauce trial and we appreciate all your feedback. This trial is currently ongoing in some of our restaurants in the north of Singapore, and our aim is not to sell sauce, but to find a way to reduce wastage. For example, if you order a 6pc Chicken McNuggets you can still get 2 units of sauce free, but if you want 3 or more units there’s a small charge. The majority of our customers don’t use that much sauce, and shouldn’t have to pay more.

I'm extremely health conscious but i hope that the focus would not move to standard sauces like tomato/chilli. Otherwise, I'd bring my own sauces to Mcdonald.
