great places to eat:
duck rice at buona vista. it's in this little row of shophouses in a residential district, and there's absolutely NO parking space. owned by a family, where all the men look alike..
very good duck rice sauce, and pretty cheap as well, with generous helpings.
pow sing chicken rice at serangoon gardens. it's good for all sorts of peranakan food, though the standard appears to be dropping. the uncle can be very fierce to fussy customers, and doesnt react well to ppl asking for more blacksauce/chilli. the chicken sauce is great! chicken is tender, and rice is very fragrant. worth trying also is the baby kailan, and black pepper deer meat. the latter is VERY hot, but extremely tender and succulent. absolutely delicious!!
sg is a hotbed of great food. chompchomp is the best mix of allll sorts of food, though prices are a little steep. most notable are the bbq stingrays, fried banana, and hokkien mee. but be prepared to put up with MAJOR attitude from the last stall...
also at sg, is killiney rd kopitiam's branch. famous for its kaya bread with meltingggg butter(chow yun fatt patronises the store!!!), french toast and half-boiled egg. definitely a great place for breakfast.
claypot rice at geylang, lorong 23(??). it's veryyyyy good. you're advised to call them just before you set off, cos it takes roughly 1/2hr to cook the rice, and you'll die of hunger cravings if you wait for them to cook, with other tables tucking into their food already. also try their bamboo clams, and fried fish.
Kopitiam at meridian has a store selling great fried chicken cutlet. gd for a meal break after playing pool at monster (if you're in that age group.) the sauce is veryyy good, and the chicken extremely tender.
russian food, at shashlik, far east plaza/sq (not the teenager's hangout. the one besides planet hollywood), level 6. their borsch soup is MARVELLOUS, esp if there's lots of sour cream. worth trying is the egg-millionaire, escargots, and shashlik steak, plus their famous dessert.
cant remm the name, but it's when they douse an icecream cake in flaming alcohol... hot and cold together, yummmm.
