Several heads turned and look at me disapprovingly before i slinked discordantly further into my seat.

The smooth voice of Anita Baker began to merge with the rhythmic typing sound of a keyboard and I start to wonder if this is the result of consuming my third cup of double espresso in the space of an hour. Psychedelic feelings began to give way to a low of major edginess and, I thank the Lord for giving me a chance to behave like the masses, began my tutuing sound of disapproval.
Sadly, the wonderful voice of Da Diva persisted with the monotones of the chattering. This was clearly the straw that brought me out of my interlude and I began to scan the horizon and wonder who the hell is making all those ruckus!
And it was there and then, that I was confronted with the image of soft velvety skin and pure malevolent staring into the grass panel looking out.

i dunno why, but i am waiting for him. it's already an hour past midnight, and my ass has been grilled by my boss for coming to work late. promised her i will come in before ten from now on, and i swore to wake up on time every morning no matter what. about now i should be rotting in bed, battling the demons in my head and trying to catch a decent sleep, psyching up my brains for whatever awaits me tomorrow at work.
so dangerous. i don't even know who he is.
so effortless. his eyes smile and i can't resist his charms.
so silly. we've never met before and i am already smitten.
but i am waiting for him. my whole life? a screen interface for now. bits and bytes of thoughts - personality and images packaged in 216-websafe colors sent through fiber-optics cables. i am just another one of his sluts (in the making). why the fuck am i doing this? what the hell is wrong with me!? there's no right or wrong. but perhaps there's "why" and "how".

I donÂ’t know why, but I am waiting for her. ItÂ’s getting pretty late in the afternoon and my ego was being scorched by my motherÂ’s remark that I am putting more efforts in logging on than in studying. I swore to myself every time to study and study and yet, itÂ’s a losing fight with my inner demon. About now, I am rotting in front of the PC, trying to do some decent studying and psyching up my brains for whatever awaits me during the exams.
So dangerous. I donÂ’t even know who she is.
So effortlessly. I see her smile and I melt.
So silly. We have never met and I felt like I have known her for ages.
But I am waiting for himÂ…my whole life? Here I am, constantly looking at the image in front of my white box, pressing the enter button repeatedly, hoping to elicit a response. Hmm...
He seems so shy and reserved when I saw him, I took a immediate liking to him... quiet guys have an aura of mystery around them.
Although he was formally introduced by my friend, I spoke less than 10 sentences to him. Lounging at the corner, just looking at him makes me feel heady already. Do I really have a soft spot for guys like that? I couldn't think straight...
The gathering ended quite soon, maybe we met up too late... I was a little disappointed, when can I see him again?

As I peek at her from the safe sanctuary of the PC monitor in the lab,i looked at her like a mortal would an angel.Her bright shiny eyes and sweet smile made my stomach feel like a thousand butterflies have suddenly burst with all their might from their pupae stage to begin life anew.But suddenly she seemed to sense my presense and when she turned her head around to look in my direction,it was with a quick yet unwilling jerk of my head to pretend to focus on my monitor,yet taking quick peeks out of the corner of my wary eye to see if she was still staring in my general direction.It is with an ironic sigh that I suddenly felt that she was so near,yet so far,suddenly I had a small pleasant,yet scary thought brewing in my mind.....

I stir my coffee gently. The rythmic tink of the spoon hitting agaist the cup only seem to bring about a hypnotic trace.
Smitten? No never! I'll never allow myself to ever be put in such a situation again. But I know every curve of her face, every strand of hair, I've sketched her portrait countless times in my head, countless times on paper and everytime I pick up my charcoal pencil, I only draw the same curves.
The sky is turning dark now, very soon now it'll rain I think to myself. Maybe it might as well, as least it will mask the tears I shed, at least I'll do my crying in the rain, at least ........
The coffee's turning cold now, the last leaf on the autum's tree falls to the ground. Does she even care if I pine for her? She's in love with someone else.

Realising my foolhardiness at approaching her and my stupidity at the way I asked her, I retreated with all the glory of Dunkirk.
Women, you canÂ’t live with them and you canÂ’t kill them. DoesnÂ’t sound original but it sure make a helluva sense if you ask me. I sat back down and slurp my espresso as loud as possible, engaging in a playground fight worthy of all 5 years old. If she wants to be a nuisance, so can I! But there was no notice from her and all I have is tutuing sound from other customers.

Darn, my cup is empty again! This is really not turning out to be my day! First, my paper ambushed me with the panache of a Viet Cong guerrilla and I get provoked by a woman (I would hesitate to call her that) from the virtual world. Thinking that I could at least get some peace in a coffee club deep in the town area, who else is to pop out but that malevolent woman and her cluttering sound!
Caffeine beckons and I began my fourth pilgrimage to the coffee counter. “Another cup of double espresso please…no, on second thought, give me those foamy latte…nay, make that an americano with extra chocolate flakes!” I mentioned to my satisfaction. The bar waitress gave me a dirty look. Soon enough, my coffee arrived with no flakes and makes a swooshing sound when she deposited it 3 centimetres away from the counter. Ships had toppled over lesser waves.
Either the women of this café got something against me or it’s that month for all women `again. The month to be mad at me for no rhyme or reason.

I watched in sheer eagerness for the next move.... will he approach her agin? or will she just ignore the world and do her thing in her noisy but yet alluring ways. I was curious to see if this will become an all out war.... I could see the flare the eyes of the two of them. SItting side by side trying to get each other's attention or more like aggreviate each other.
So then I snigger at his sappy attempt to quieten down the noisy typist and I laughed under my breath with her replying remark. What wit the both of them have, its like they ewere made for each other.

Imagine this. You being able to talk about your new boyfriend to me while sipping your coffee. Right in front of me. Have you any idea why you can do that so easily? Its because I have decided never to reveal how much what you do affects me anymore. To my grave, thats what I told myself.
What was it they use to say about.... nah, come to think of it, I haven't heard what people say about this. Plenty talk about first loves, first break ups, first nights, but none talk about people naive in relationships facing rejection as their first experience.
It has been a long time since that day you told me you would rather remain friends. Friends, that interesting and exasperating grey area between girls and boys. This ambigious state that is used and abused both as a refuge for confusion or fear, as well as a convenient frame of mind for whatever feelings people haven't figured out yet. No matter. I accepted your decision long ago.
Had it not been your assumption that I handled it well, we would not be talking like this. You telling me again about your new boyfriend. I bet from my expression you will never in a million years guess what I'm thinking about. And thats the way it will stay. Like I said, to my grave.
Looking around this coffee place I bet everyone has their own story. Like that guy who nearly got a faceful of whatever he ordered. The way that waitress flung it at him you would think he tried to grab her behind. Or that funny looking guy at the corner sniggering to himself. No matter. Keep your thoughts to yourself, as I do mine.
If they had a jukebox here, I would know exactly what song to play. But as it is there is only the incessant tapping of keys, and your voice. I will be happy to just listen. Whatever I think, I'll keep. To my grave. -

Facing us with a sheepish and embarrassed grin, I could guess that she didn't want to be seen with another guy again.
With just a brief exchange of greetings, we parted ways.

I sip away at my coffee again. 7.30pm. I have looked at my watch umpteen times over the last 10 minutes, thinking it would hasten your appearance.

for one and half day, her heart was hers again until she had news of him. unbelievable, some tears fell again. why? she questions herself and she prays "please let this be a mere infatuation."
this heaviness around her heart, the clutching of it that she feels the pain and tears welling in her eyes, she doesn't like it. how long has it been when she has last felt anything for anyone? suddenly, feeling nothing doesn't seems that bad afterall. it sure is better than these feelings of jealously and possessiveness mixed with uncomprehensible yearning.

As i was about to take a sip of fresh yet vaguely bitter coffee,I heard a melodious and sweet voice float on the cool August breeze from behind me.Turning my head around casually so as not to evoke any response from my friends at my table.I saw her,sitting at a round table chatting with her group of friends.Although I could not make out what she was saying above the din in the canteen,but the sight of this angel on earth and the sound of her sweet voice suddenly made me realise that love at first sight does exist,even for a sceptic like moi,I almost made an involuntarily smile at her,but I was stopped short by a sudden warm yet pleasant feeling that was rising up to my face and culimating in my ears.Almost on cue,my friends noticed the sudden redness in my face and began to whisper among themeselves while i forgot my cup of coffee and my eyes focused on this angel on earth

August. 3pm, right in the middle of a hot summer's day. It's been a whole afternoon since we were out. As I slinked into the comfort of one of the coffee joint’s couch, I couldn’t help but think to myself for a second “God knows how dirty this is! Look at those coffee stains!” But I didn’t care; I was tired and flushed from the scorching sun outside. Shining down mercilessly on our little island… “Ah… thank God for air-con!”
Sipping my little cup of iced mango juice (or is it slush?), I was disappointed that it didn’t quite turn out as I had imagined it to be. But what the heck! It’s chill was enough to snap me out of my drowsiness already. Looking around me, the café was fairly crowded for a weekday afternoon. Probably because NDP was coming up real soon and there were lot of preparations going on at the nearby Padang. Chuckling to myself, I wondered how many of these people were “taking an unscheduled coffee break” from their jobs…
The laughter from the next table jolted me back to reality. I couldn’t hear what they were talking about, but it was in a language that I couldn’t be mistaken about. An accent so strangely familiar yet comforting. Yes… it’s been a long time. I smiled to myself and turned to my pal, who had been complaining about her drink and the service from the poker-faced server at the counter for the last few minutes. What about, I’ve no idea. Interrupting her, I said: “Sure feels good to be home again…” and she stared in confusion. Then she smiled. It was a common sentiment we both shared. No explanation needed.

Here I am again, sitting in my room with my mind filled with many question marks. Wanting so hard to find the answer, but yet can not. A sigh released...

I harbor the valid fear that I may never meet someone who "loves me for who I am". Someone that will accept my idiosyncracies, laugh with me during my "blonde" moments, and share my embarrassing secrets. In a way, however, I do this to myself. I sometimes hesitate to reveal my true self while hiding behind my ideal image of myself. I want to be loved unconditionally, yet do I truly love myself?! Do I accept myself minus the shopping marathons, make-up, and all else that is superficial?! The world around me can be as superficial as I make it to be. Sometimes amidst all of this craziness - I tend to forget who I truly am - and though outer appearances do matter to a certain extent, (the cynical truth) what is it about me that truly make me a unique and a special individual? I have always been concerned about the state of my appearance. Can I truely be as passionate, grounded, articulate, intelligent and beautiful (inside and out), I idealize myself to be?!
And yet another meaningless question mark on my mind....
