Hi,i'm asking this question on behalf of my friend.
Anyway,he wanted to install a heavy bag in his hdb flat.He's planning to buy a 6ft 70 kg heavy bag.The question is, can a hdb ceiling sustain a bag that heavy?
If not can all of you advised on what's the heaviest bag,a hdb ceiling can hold without causing problem to the infrastructure?

call hdb or town council to check with them.

i think the ceiling should be strong enough to hold the punching bag. If you are living on the 10th floor, the person on top of you will have furnitures that weigh more than a few hundred kilograms...
But, you need a strong hook to hold the punching bag..

it really depends on the ceiling, if the ceiling got renovate, then probably not, but I dont know how he is planning to hang it though, how he install the hook? it all depends on that. the structure itself is sturdy enough, after all people live above and never crash through the floor.Originally posted by fedor:Hi,i'm asking this question on behalf of my friend.

Is there any chance the ceiling might crack or collaspe.Is it even possible for that to happen? -
if the cause of the collapse is due to the installation of the punching bag. your friend has to be prepared to fork out the money for repair of the upstairs neighbour's floor.
check with towncouncil or hdb. thats ur best bet. -

My friend had email the hdb regarding the punching bag thingy and this is their reply:
"For suspension of any object directly from the ceiling, the
allowable
maximum weight of the object should not exceed 6 Kg. As the weight of
the
punching bag has exceeded this limit, you would have to provide an
independent supporting system resting on the floor to suspend the
punching
bag. Such activities should not cause nuisance to the neighbours."
Just for everyone information in case u're all thinking of installing a heavy bag in your flat.that's all. -

infrastructure? u worry too much le, better worry about finding the suitable fixture to sustain that bag on the ceiling

So in other words, the ceiling can definately hold a 70kg bag which is consistently punched and kicked at without causing any problems to the ceiling,is that what u're trying to say,acid_rain?
Btw the fixture can definately hold the heavy bag's weight,he had confirm with me before,it's just the ceiling that he is worried about.
Then why would the hdb state that only 6kg can be allowed?
Any people who have punching bags at home,pls share your views.

Oh no problem,just post your opinions,anyway i'm only posting these questions on behalf on my friend since his internet connection is down at the moment.
He really need to know the consequence if his actions{hanging a heavy bag} in a hdb flat might land him into trouble with the neighbours or the authorities.

(1) The actual static weight of the bag is 70 kg. But the true downward force is much more than 70 kg. A 6 ft, 70 kg sandbag is used mainly by kickboxers, which means that your friend will be tugging on the bag, hugging it, pulling on it, etc.....at times, in laymen's terms, the actual downward force = weight of bag + weight of your friend + momentum. Clearly, this could easily exceed 150 kg in actual weight.
(2) A 6-ft bag swings a lot. Your friend will need at least 3-4 m radius or free space around the bag (including space for your friend to jump around). I'm not sure if this kind of empty space can be found in a HDB flat, considering there must be furniture, etc around.
(3) Such a bag will require a qualified contractor to hang, probably with a few bolts, bracket, etc....its definitely not just a simple bolt fixture. I don't think any HDB-certified contractor will do it (or risk their licences, since they're breaking HDB's rules of 6 kg).
(4) If the bag is hung from the ceiling, you will slowly feel powder falling onto the floor because the cement around the bolts are rubbing off part of the plaster. Soon, the bolt may come lose and the bag will drop. The ceiling will be safe....just that there will be a hole there. The bag would probably need to be hung from a support beam, but thats definitely not allowed.
(5) Lets say that 6-foot long bag is hanging from the ceiling, 1-2 feet from the ground. This means that the chain is very short (1-2 feet at most). There are lots of forces when the bag flies sideways - the bag flies sideways, it pulls on the chains, etc. Something must give way. In the last few months, I've seen 5 bags being damaged this way - because the chain was too short and there was not enough provision for the bag to fly sideways without tugging on the chain too much. (If the ceiling is high enough and the chain is long enough, the bag just swings like a giant pendulum - there is less stress on the chain).
(6) This is the main reason why not to. When the bag is hit, the bang sound is VERY loud. It will be heard easily from a few floors up and down, even during the nosiest hours. The HDB flat will also act as a 'trumpet' and will echo the sound all the way to the next few blocks. Definitely neighbours will complain and when HDB comes to check and finds something more than 6 kg hanging there....oooooh, your friend is in trouble.

Unless the punching bag is 6kg or below which to me is pretty pointless to install it anyway. -

To summarise, I believe in the rule "you can do anything you want, as long as you don't get caught". haha. But in this case, its hard to get away with it....d
So yeah, I think its not a good idea to hang a bag in an HDB flat. Please understand that this is only my own opinion (which maybe be far from professional....but I've had experience with bags before and I do know that they're very very noisy and require long chains). -
There are alternatives to a hanging heavy bag. Do a search on the Sparpro and the Wavemaster. These are free-standing heavybags(?) where you fill the base with either sand/water.
The noise is still a problem though. -

Let's say the punching bag is 60kg. Then the force will be 60 x 9.81 = 588.6N
Assuming the helding device only have a surface area of 1 cm². 1m² = 100cm x 100cm. 1m = 100cm. 1cm = 0.01m
0.01m x 0.01m = 0.0001m²
0.0001/X = 1/3000N
X = 0.3N
So... Go figure!

Believe me. But 70kg...... is farking heavy i dun recommend you to hang on the ceiling. Get a lighter one if u can. i have a 20kg bag but i am too lazy to hang it up.
