  If I change my HP to 3G type,
  will I get to keep my existing line number?

  Yes you get to keep you nos.
  
  Basically a 2G and a 3G simcards differs only in the security features and authentication algorithms.. If not becos of that, operators would not want to change the simcard for 2G sub migrating to 3G platform.. you know it so expensive for a 3G simcard.
  
  Some of the regional operators do not issue genuine 3G simcards to their 2G Sub when they migrate to 3G service. This helps to keep cost down.
