The only reason people think little of the issue of covering up is the fact that they have not experienced the horror of that war. If your father/mother/wife/husband/children were killed by the Japanese, would you not feel enraged by the fact that they want to gloss over their atrocities so that the younger generation will not know how much suffering was endured because of their forefathers? By not taking a firm stance on this we are trivialising our dead, disrespecting them by wiping their memories off the face of the earth.
This issue is more serious than your sushi-eating or Japanese cars. Please don't disrespect the sacrifices that our forefathers have made. -

It is possible that without the two bombs in 1945, Singaporeans would be studying their textbooks in Japanese today. -

Massacre of Chinese Populace
Having gained control over Singapore on February 15, 1942, General Tomoyuki Yamashita instructed the Japanese garrison commander to round up the anti-Japanese elements.
The plan, issued by the Imperial Headquarters, was to gather all Chinese males between the ages of 18 and 50 at various locations, screen them, and execute those identified as anti-Japanese.
Screening centres were set up all over Singapore. Most of them were situated in areas of large Chinese populous. Among them were Java Road, Arab Street, Telok Kurau English School, St. Joseph's Institution, and Chinatown.
At the Chinatown screening centre, lorries were parked nearby ready to take anti-Japanese suspects to remote locations such as Changi, Punggol and Bedok, where they were all massacred.
The lucky ones were stamped with an "examined" word on their faces, arms, clothing or just pieces of paper. They were free to return home to their families afterwards.
We do not know how many men were executed during the Sook Ching exercise.
When the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Appeal Committee for Singapore Chinese Victims Massacred by Japanese, attempted to investigate by urging people to report deaths of family members and relatives, only 8600 were reported.
Research have shown that there were many more.
Whatever the number is, Sook Ching will, remain a horrific and traumatic experience in the memory of the survivors.

Why not those that want to boycott the Japanese just go and hold a demonstration like the one in China. See what will happen to you.

In our first edition, we traced the last few weeks leading up to fall of Singapore. We revisited some of the sites of the fiercely fought battles and also recalled the gallant efforts of the men and women who died defending Singapore right up to February 15th 1942 and who now lay buried at the Kranji Commonwealth War cemetery.
BF: “For me as a military historian, its one of the more dramatic days of the 2nd World War when the British and their Commonwealth allies were forced to surrender Singapore and relinquish the naval base to the Japanese”.
Brian Farrell is an Associate Professor in the History Department at the National University of Singapore where he teaches military history.

This Civilian War Memorial is unique in the sense that it has four pillars representing the different races in Singapore – Chinese, Malays, Indians and Eurasians. But for the past 38 years, we’ve witnessed solemn services being held at this memorial, but I must ask you this question, do you think the young people of Singapore, will they understand and appreciate what you’ve just narrated for our listeners and beyond that, will they in turn remember long after you and I are gone?
AP: “Well the Chinese Chambers has this yearly memorial service on the 15th February and this service is always well attended by students. Normally we have thousand over students from various schools, tertiary institutions, we have council members, diplomatic corp, veterans, even prisoners of war from Australia, New Zealand and UK, as well as families of the victims attending this memorial service. This yearly memorial service serves as a constant reminder to our younger generation who have never experienced the atrocities of war to bear in mind those people who have sacrificed their life for the sake of peace. I think only with knowledge can the young generation appreciate the peace we have now as well as value of freedom and the importance of self reliance in the defence of our country”.
TK: “It will be very sad if our younger generation don’t remember it because the war thought us that we have to rely on ourselves, we are a small nation, we are very vulnerable, and that war is never nice, it’s a very ugly thing”.
