CODY, Wyo. - A 27-year state hatchery worker has been honored for driving 1 million miles, all accident-free, to deliver fish. John Burns, who lives at the Game and Fish Department's Clarks Fork Hatchery north of Cody, received special recognition from the Game and Fish Commission recently.
Burns' travels have taken him to 11 states either transporting or accepting fish for delivery, including North Dakota, Michigan, Texas, Alabama and Arkansas.
Hazards along the way included numerous Wyoming blizzards, fuel gelling in his truck when the temperature sunk to 26 below in Jackson, and missing by mere hours an F5 tornado that ripped through Oklahoma City while he was en route for a load of channel catfish.
"If you didn't know the route, you would have been totally lost because all the highway signs had been torn away by the tornado," Burns said.
His first trip occurred April 10, 1978, and involved taking a load of male walleye from Ocean Lake to Keyhole Reservoir for a spawning operation.
His millionth mile occurred more than 26 years later, on May 18, 2004, while taking a truckload of kokanee salmon from the Auburn Hatchery to Flaming Gorge Reservoir.
