  ascii for human to read, binary for machine to read.

  If you are uploading text files (eg. HTML, TXT), then use ASCII mode transfer.
  If you are uploading other files (eg. JPG, PDF), then use Binary mode transfer.
  You could set your default mode to Binary and upload text files as well.
