Business Before NSF

You know I've been talking about this alot with my friends lately.
Anyone thinks it's possible for guys to start businesses before serving their National Service?
Afterall, if you fail you fail.
If you succeed, it'll fail anyway when you enter the Army because you can't manage the firm and your staff(if any) would wreck havoc. -
so wats the point of starting a buisness if ur mentality is this way?

I wonder if you're trying to be 'motivate' me to think postively or simply can't read.
If you haven't realized, I am precisely asking if it's viable to start a business. -

There's a difference between:
thinking that my business will fail
and
thinking my business will fail AFTER you enlist
And the purpose of this post is not on whether I should start a business or how I should make my business succeed.
But to ask if it's FEASIBLE to run a business while in NSF.

there's a guy in my platoon who has his own IT business. he hired indians to do the programming, all he does is lias with people.
only downside is that you're not allowed to draw any pay, easily aviodable by just directing that pay to your family members. -

my platoon mate ran a printing shop when he was still serving ns...
we had 1 day off after 24 hrs duty...
if you dun need to rest...
then should be no prob... -

My idea is to concentrate on your business, unless you're very good at time management. -
I ran a software development firm during my NS days. Took a hell of a lot of energy out of me, I was running on 2 or 3 hrs sleep a night. Aged me a lot. Not to mention the fact that you need very cooperative superiors and social engineering to get "off" when you need to.
If you can, don't do it until ORD. The interruptions (have to go for exercises, mobilisations, etc.) are really annoying, especially when you have to meet clients or rushing for a deadline. After you ORD, you can concentrate fully on the business. For me, business performance picked up nearly 2 or 3 fold after I ORDed. So you may find it not worth your while to run your company during NS, especially if when you see your friends book out to have real fun while you go home to work. Then again, this will really test if you are passionate about your line of work.

Weirdo80: Appreciate you sharing your experience. I'm personally rather passionate, that's why I want to start my own firm.
However the problem is that the timings are rather irregular, dependent on customer.
So I can do it well now, but when I enter NS, I will probably have to hire people, which is fine...if I have the time to manage them

Afterall you can have all the drive in the world, but if you are locked in camp with trainings all day round, you just can't manage your team nor company

MooMoo, I too, was once like you...almost exactly in your shoes. I remember rushing like hell 3 days before I entered BMT to deliver a computer program to a client. I made it, nearly killed me and my buddies tho....and the client was stuck for 3 months without patches or upgrades....
You have drive and passion - that is very, very good and I would say most of the population doesn't have this. That is why Singapore is not reknown for its entrepreneurs. However, drive and passion is half the battle won. It also depends on what you do with that passion. NS will definetely change your perspective. It will help you establish contacts, learn people skills, getting out of a sticky situation. In that way it is beneficial to you as a budding entrepreneur. Besides technical skills, people skills are very, very important especially in high product customization industries like mine where there is very high consumer participation.
Having business skills is very important too. I recommend you take the time and save money so that you can go for an MBA somewhere down the line. It really helped me to strategize and think hard about the business. Also helps to deal with customers and negotiate with them. I would say that without a business degree, I would not be able to manage the business as well or close as many sales. The paper qualification was a bonus but for me it was the actual business skills that are really worth something. -

This is what I noticed about Singaporeans. Well, afterall, survival isn't that hard, neither is it that easy.
Whenever I ask my friends if they have any idea on starting their business, their mind straight away go the direction of cost and finance. And they just fail to see pass the barrier of cost. -

do your business only after you finish ns. get rid of your s'pore passport and change citizenship...you wont have to serve reservist or pay high taxes..no interuptions or hurdles, just stay here as a "foreign talent" and keep your money for yourself.
