Can't help u on the transport as I went with my company club. But do expect the climb to be rather humid. And beware of leeches dropping from the trees. A ligher is sufficient to get them off.
Yes. 8 checkpoints with the 4th checkpoint still able to U-turn back as vehicles can still reach there (At least its true for the path I took). Hands-on experience like pulling urself up on a 45-60 degrees slope with a rope starts after the 5th checkpoint.
