DOOM3 : No surround sound

  How come DOOM3 can't be played in surround sound even though I've got an optical cable connected to my sound system?

  Did you enable it in the game options?
  Is it compataible with your setup?
  Are your cables connected properly?

  tried to enable surround sound and it said it wasn't detected.
  
  compatible, well my DVDs do work.
  
  connected, yeah if not I wouldn't be listening to music now.

  Try it with standard stereo 2 channels first.

  PCM is just 'uncoded' digital audio. If your DVD-player decodes a DTS stream for your amp, it 'breaks' the DTS-code to make it 5.1-channel PCM, and then it makes that to the analog 5.1 audio with its DACs.
  
  If I play CDs or MP3s with my PC and then take the sound out of the digital input, it is a PCM stream but only in stereo. DD or DTS are needed for multichannel and that requires encoders and decoders.
  
  Also when playing a CD with a CD-player through a digital out, you have PCM.
  
  DVD-Vs can have 96/24 PCM sound (I dont know how it differs from DVD-A, maybe it doesn't), but only in stereo, so you might have heard that and it sounded very good.

  something i don't understand, i do the sound test, and only my left and right speakers have sounds...

  PCM stands for Pulse Code Modulation. It is a way of storing recorded sounds, much like digitizing a wave file for your personal computer. The most basic building-blocks of the 01 are the Multi-Sounds and Drum Sounds that are stored in ROM as PCM-encoded recordings (or "samples").

  I think its coz the test only does standard left and right, not surround capability. Its been close to half a year since I last played it.

  no no, the test is from the MSI program, supposed to test all the individual speakers.
  
  left has sound, right has sound... then the others... nothing.

  Woah, now thats harder, I really have to be in your chair to find out. But if you said your dvds and game work ok now right? Then I wouldn't really be so concern with the test. Some packaged things can be more cranky than you think.
