frankly and truely speaking a server (to my best knowledge) can do the following:-
your computer can function as a server when it is linked up to the master server so you can host online games and customize settings to allow players from all over the world accessible to the proxy servers in your area to join. overall game peformances, fram rates etc are very much dependent on the hardware performance of your selected computer server parts so please dun host f your server comp su cks.
your computer can link up to the webpages (or your personnel homepage uploaded via FTP) so that larger files or media contents can be distributed or shared with the requester upon requisite. on a larger scale you can do business on sales or other IT related stuff with your own server if it is not against the law or piracy and with proper perrmission granted.
a server can also server as LAN (local Area Networking) so that a few or a group of specified machines (eg. connected via wire/ cable or bluetooth) can communicate by exchanging/ sharing / working with information or gaming.
these are the basics one should know.
also, Intel Xeon processors (according to Intel homepage news records) was first released in 1998 which is approximately 7 years before now(4-D also not so accurate right ....mere luck!) so the next time someone ask you what is a server...can say more about it instead of walking away.
so much for the commercial break...now back to lan jiao
